Why does make up matter?

I started to love making myself up when I was 21. What seemed to be a simple 'feel good' habit became something more sophisticated as I got older.

Undeniably, it is me- in my profile- wearing make up. Well, not only make up but perfume, too. I was unconscious of the effect of make up to me and to the people around me or those who see me. I put on make up for myself; just to feel good.

As I move from one make up style to another, I become more confident or self-assured. I feel more powerful and I can face people better.

Make up reflects our personality. But is make up really important?

There is a research by a Harvard psychologist which proves that make up helps how people perceive women. Nancy Etkoff, together with her team, conducted a study among women and said, "Faces with the glamorous and sexy make-up looks were perceived as more competent, just as likeable, but less trustworthy than those same faces without make-up. The researchers concluded that the stronger make-up looks equalled greater social power. In further research, the women with the sexy eye make-up look were also rated as more daring, sociable, and even healthier than women with no make-up."

Also, according to them, women with make up has a higher self-esteem, with more positive moods, and with greater performance. "They thought they were doing a great job at work as well as looking good", the research says.

So it seems that make-up helps how we are perceived.

Do you agree?

  • Camel:

I understand what you mean. As they say, beauty is always skin deep. So yeah, when someone has a beautiful heart, it radiates and reflects his/her personality.

  • Hi, ladies!

Thanks for the comments. And thanks Alice for the compliment. I am a teacher, too. Right. Wearing make up is like adding magic to the class. But yes, make up that is not disturbing to the students ;-))

I agree to all of you. Women should be confident with or without make up, just like Rhaani. They said that natural beauty is the real beauty.

Also, Setareh and Evangeline's points are right. Too much of everything is not good, anyway. It's like do everything in moderation.

Afro: sometimes I am confused, too :-) I don't wear make up every day..But I sure put lipstick when I work. It makes me feel a bit alive! LOL!

  • It was a question in my mind why women like to wear make up? it may be because they want to look prettier or to boost their self confidence. But i do believe that using too much make up does not make someone beautiful.
we are beautiful just the way we are. This is a fact that I like all woman to accept it.
some women in my country wear so much make up or add some other things to their face like artificial eyebrows which in my opinion is not beautiful at all. To some extent using make up is nice but not so much of that.
  • Hi Michelle, I think make-up does affect how people perceive us especially kids.  In my experience as a preschool teacher, kids love it when you come to class looking alive with a nice bright lipstick on you.  It's like an instant eye-opener for them, like sunshine!  I think you look great with your make-up and I bet still better without it too! :)

  • Well, I am confused about it. sometimes think, I should put eye-liner sometimes feel it is unnecessary. But, I am sure, everyday we should not do make up. Actually, it depends on our personality. Yes, we should look smart but should we look beautiful to everyone's eyes!
