Before the children go to school, the majority of them go to a nursery school where they stay as long as their parents work. All of them are very excited about the beginning of the school time.
The first day at school is always special and at the weekend before, the school and families gives for the kids a celebration.
In the morning the families go to a short celebration to the school. There perform  pupils from from the second class of the school a program with singing, they also recite poems and they tell about the daily life at school. The principal of the school speaks some words to the parents and relatives and each child is presented. Later, and that is always the most important for the kids, they get a big "Zuckertüte". That's a very big paper bag, about 1 m tall, filled with candies and chokolate and useful stuff for the school lessons.

The big paper bags (Zuckertüten) with the names of the children hang on a big tree or they lie under the tree. Each child takes his paper bag and the relatives and parent take photos. Of course, each single child immediately will unpack the paper bags.... as soon as they reach their home. The families celebrate a feast with relative and friends at home or at a nice restaurant. The kids are excited because the guests bring gifts, too. It's always a big fun for the kids and a good occasion for the relatives to meet each other.

Past weekend was the celebration of one of my grandchildren. I had baked a big cake and this cake had the form of a "Zuckertüte", it was a big surprise for my little girl... and not only for her ... also for the adults.

I wrote this blog because I'm very interested to hear about how the habits in other countries are.

  • It's a very nice blog. Zuckertüten is a very new thing for me. I had no idea about it before. Nope, There is no such kind of celebration. But, yeah, siblings go with their father or mother hand in hand putting new clothes on, pretty passionate picture .

  • thanks brother, I think we should share here also our habits and traditions. So we know each other better.

  • Very nicely you shared your country's school tradition. Nice to read it & enjoy, also known about there, Thanks for sharing dear sister.

  • Thanks for your comments on my blog.

First written evidence of this kind od paper bags were reported to be in 1801 in the Thuringian Forest, 1817 for Jena and 1820 for Dresden. That are states and cities of Germany. Large distribution has the tradition not least found by a children's book of 1852: In the "sugar bag book for all children who go for the first time in the school"  says that there is a special tree in the basement of the school, from the teacher the brave students pluck a bag.

  • Hello Rose!

Thank you so very much to let us know the school traditions there. If the celebration in your place is held at the beginning, mine is usually at the end. Yes, we celebrate farewell or parting after graduation where we could see student's performances. There are also event before school started but no special habit in particular, it's rather depend on the school, usually just a little introduction during few days.

Anyway, That's so sweet of you baked a big cake for your little girl, she must be proud of you ;)
