  • Dear Mr.Sadredin,

I agree with what you said and I am not in the position that talk about teacher's job. I really appreciate what teachers do and I am not very knowledgable to talk about it. But, based on my experiences, I got the feeling that a great teacher can handle class while he/she is gentle. I do not think it would be a good idea if teachers do not have power in class. Because of being powerful in the class, teachers will be a dictator. They can not stand any questions. They are not friendly. They even talk with the black-board not with the students. Whenever i remember my high school or elementary school, the first thing that comes to my mind is the frightening moments that I had. The word, Teacher, for me means someone that I have to be afraid of. Someone that only orders me to do my homework and if i don't or even make mistakes, he/she will punish me. The education system and worse than that, teachers do not allow students to make mistakes, which is very normal thing. When you want to learn riding a bicycle, you make a lot of mistakes until you learn how to ride. This is the same in schools. We should be allowed to make mistakes until we can learn. In education system, they teach us a lot of lessons without even practicing it in reality. For example, learning English in Iran is only to learn the grammar and reading. Students do not have the opportunity to go to audio labs to learn how to speak in English and so on. But, when students make mistakes in grammar, they will be punished. It seems that you teach someone swimming but not in the pool but on the ground. My question is that why teachers punish students for making mistakes? making mistakes is part of learning process. Each mistakes can teach us lessons. Therefore, by this power of punishing or giving a low mark to students, teachers want to keep their power. I accept their power for handling the class but the way they do it is totally wrong in my opinion.

Having absolute power in the class brings fear and this fear may not affect some students but may affect a sensitive student. The fear of teaher was always with me until I came to Canada. Here i really learned the real meaning of being a teacher. In Canada, teachers are handling classes very well but they do not creat fear. They answer all questions. No body laughs at students. If you ask a silly question, they do not think that you are a silly person. They really LOVE teaching. If you ask them to explain a lesson one thousand times, they will do it without being angry or look misrable.

They are side by side of students in learning process. They do not pretend to know everything. If you ask a question and they do not know the answer, they will tell you that they will try to find the answer and the next day, they will answer you. It is normal if a teacher does not know about the question. But, in Iran, teachers want to show off and tell students that they are much better and have vast knowledge. But, in Canada, it occured to me that they do not show off or pretend to know everything. They admit they do not know and therefore, they also allow students to make mistakes. In Canada, both teachers and students do not have EGO. Teachers teach us that we do not know at all but we should try until to know. My Canadian teacher said to me that" I am not perfect but I am pretty good." I always remember her advice. I learned here that I do not know and it is not important that I do not know or make mistakes. There is no need to be PERFECT. But, it is sooooo important to TRY.
Instead in Iran, they want you to be perfect, which is both impossible and irrational and because all teachers Love only perfect students, so they praise only the perfect student. That is why all good students in Iran are so arrogant and not helpful. Both students and teachers have EGO. It is really upsetting because the fate of a society will be determined by teachers and teachers should guide students not only be a knowledgable person but also be a great human. It is supposed that enhancing knowledge enlighten people's life because the purpose of life is enlightment. But, the education system has turned upside down and has gone in a wrong direction which does not support the purpose of life, enlightment.

I hope I do not make you upset by my talk since I am trying to share my experience.
Thank you so much for your comment.

    Have a wonderful time,
    Nafis
  • Thank you all for your nice comments, there are some good points worth talking in your comments first I list them so we have a clear idea what we are going to talk about:

    Nafis pointed out:

1.Most teachers think that when they are in the class they are powerful and can do whatever they want.

2.they make fun of students because of their questions.

3.I think a great teacher is the one who should answer all questions from simple to complicated ones.

4.Some teachers only work with good students and ignore others.

5.Some teachers only creat fear inside class.

6.I think a great teacher is the one who brings up a great and creative student.

    Maryam pointed out:

7.a good teacher is who talk to his students about serious problems in the society and the world, so they'll feel bigger .

8.to be a teacher mean you should be a special person.

To tell you the truth the first part of comment 1 should be true,in the class the teacher should have the authority ( Power ) as long as handling the class is concerned but the second part of comment 1 is not true I mean I am with Nafis,a teacher should not feel that he/she can do whatever he/she want to do.A class is a place of interaction and students also play a great deal in the class and their ideas are as important as the teacher's,so he should not feel he is the only one in the class who can play there are other players right in front of him/her sitting on the chairs.

    2. Unfortunately you are right,I always tell my colleagues that no question is wrong and funny but there are the answers that make right or wrong. So there's no reason to make fun of a student because of the question, experienced teachers never do that if they have a fine personality which plays a great deal.

    3. Why do you think that? Why should a teacher be able to answer and know all the answers? But in a student's idea a teacher has to know everything but I make it clear for my students that this is a wrong idea. They should not expect their teacher to know everything, for no one is perfect.A wise man said,"The more we know, the more we want to know and when we know enough we know that we don't know."
    4. True again, for the very first part when teachers need feedback they have to ask good students and use them as models then they should shift the questions to somehow weak ones and give them the chance to participate this is what a good and experienced teacher always do,but if this technique changes to one that he/she only ask good students and ignore the weak ones then this class is not a good one and the teacher is not considered to be a good teacher.By the way those weak students should try their best to participate and stop being passive.

5.In some cultures teachers have to start from being tough then shift to being a little non-strict for then this shift is not that hard and the class is handled. On the other hand if you want to be somehow moderate or easy going then it would be hard to show some toughness to control the class this is true with some classes that are troublesome.A teacher can make a good relationship with the students and create a friendly atmosphere but consider this in mind there are always some students that are troublesome and if the teacher is not experienced then you can guess what may happen in that class.
6.A good teacher make good students and vice versa I suggest you reading my favorite quote.
    7. Well you take words out of my mouth,a teacher's job is not only teaching the materials but also telling the students what's right or wrong the teach them the way to live an honorable life,in fact I do teach them here and then while I'm teaching the book and I understand that they really like and need them.
    8. Read my favorite quote , I love it.
  • Hello,
    Dear Mr.Sadredin,

I really appreciate all my teachers' work but I didn't have the one who affected me a lot. I had only one teacher that helped me a lot and I still remember him very well and thanks him for what he taught me. His lesson was that I can do whatever I want and no one and nothing can prevent me to do so. Whenever I have problem in my life or feel frustrated and disappointed, I remember what he always said: "There is nothing but trying." Unfortunately, he passed away but, he is always in my heart.

Most teachers think that when they are in the class they are powerful and can do whatever they want. sometimes, they make fun of students because of their questions, which I hate this attitude. I think a great teacher is the one who should answer all questions from simple to complicated ones. The important thing is that teachers shoud treat equally with all students. Some teachers only work with good students and ignore others. Some teachers only creat fear inside class. I clearly remember the days when i was really afraid of my teachers. I was not comfortable at all in the class and therefore, I think I could not learn very well . I think a great teacher is the one who brings up a great and creative student.

    Wishing you well,
    Nafis
