Victory Day

Today most post Soviet countries celebrate the 65th anniversary of victory in WW II. It has always been one of the greatest holidays here. Needless to say, 8 mln Ukrainians took part in military actions and a half of them was killed, a half of those who survived became disable. Most of Ukrainian cities were ruined, about 1300 villeges were destroyed completely together with their population. Actually, Ukraine and Byelorussia suffered more than other Soviet territories. One can hardly find a family that didn't loose anyone during that horrible war and later repressions. So, on this day all our people, including those who are very young, are seized with the same mixed feeling of happiness, pride and greaf. It is joy with tears, happiness with bitterness of loses. This year Russia, Ukraine and Byelorussia are celebrating it together. In the morning there was a great historical military parade on our main street in Kiev with Russians and Byelorussians taking part in it. Since 1991 it has been the first time when Ukrainian and Russian officers have been marching together in Kiev and in Moscow. After the parade there was a show on our main square. Everything was really very moving.May 9 is a day that unites most of post Soviet countries. Horrors of the war, fear and greif lived throug together will never be forgotten. If the USSR hadn't taken part in that war, where would present Europe be?Today at 7 p.m. all our country will light candles, kneel down and honor those who died during WW II with a minute of silence. And the Eternal Flame in all cities-heroes reminds us of that war every day for us not to forget and not to repeat the mistakes of the past!
