"The ugly wife'

It's a story taken from Ancient  Greece.

Anaxagoras ,the Greek plilosopher , married a woman who was very ugly.He married her because she was very rich and she had a large dowry.

One day he went for a walk with his wife. He saw a friend and introduced  his new wife  to him.

His friend asked in surprise:"Is she really your wife?"

"Yes , of course ," answered Anaxagoras.

The man said , "But she's cross-eyed,"

"I know ," answered Anaxagoras.

"And one leg shorter than the other , "his friend said.

"I  know, "  the philosopher said.

"And look at her face . She has no hair on it."

"I know , " was the answer.

"She must eat a lot. She's very fat."

"I know that ,too." poor Anaxagoras said."But you can speak louder , my friend , because she doesn't hear well either. She's nearly deaf."

The eyes of Anaxagoras's wife were crossed. She was crosseyed. Now , What do we call a man:

1. Who has one leg?

2. Who has one arm?

3. Who has bowed legs?(i.e. curving outwards at the knees)?

4.Who cannot see distant things clearly?

5. Who cannot see at all?

6.Who has no hair (or not much hair on the sculp?

7. Who cannot speak?

8.Who cannot hear at all?

9. Who cannot walk normally because of an injury or defect?

10. Who uses the left hand more easily than the right?

From the words below choose the right one to answer the above questions and then use the new words in sentences of your own.

  • Hi Anastasia,
I think that this story is symbolic because it is unreasonable that one person brings all these disabilities.
But overall money always leicester the defects for who loves it. The story is beautiful, but I suggest that the blog's name must be "corpse animated wife". Thank you very much.

  • Leonardo, I like your comments.

  • 1.one-legged. I seldom see one-legged people in my neighbourhood.

2.one-armed. Losing one arm and becoming to be one-armed sounds so miserable.

3.bandy-legged. This bandy-legged boy has a good sense of humour and never felt sorry about himself.

4.short-sighted. More and more students got short-sighted because of too much reading under dim light.

    5. blind. What colour could be the dreams of the blind?

    6. bald. What's the mechanism of becoming bald as time going by?

    7. dumb. There are gesture languages for the dumb, but it varies from each country to another.

    8. Stone deaf. After a serious disease, she became stone deaf. She felt more peaceful because of having been tired of the crowded world.

9.lame. Though she became lamed, she still keeps going to work as usual.

    10. Left-handed. People say left-handed people are more likely to be smart and talented. Is that true?
