The story of the two bowls

Once upon lived an old Chinese woman who had two large bowls which she used to carry water. Each day, she would hang them both on the ends of a pole that she carried across the back of her neck.
One of the bowls had a crack while the other was always able to hold the full amount of water.
The old woman went every day to the river to pick up water. At the end of her long walk from the river to her house lost the damaged bowl the half of its water.
The old woman went so for two years to the river but she brought only one and a half bowl full of water to her home.

cracked pot story

Of course, the flawless bowl was very proud of her capacity but the arm bowl with the crack was ashamed because of her flaw and she was very sad that she was not able to bring her full capacity.
After two years which seemed to be an endless torture for the bowl, she said to the old woman, "I am ashamed of my crack from which always water runs out when you go to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Didn't you notice that on your side of the path flowers are blossom but not on the other side where the flawless bowl is?" I have sown seed of flowers on your side of the path because I was aware  of your flaw. Now I pour them while we walk home... completely automatically without any effort. For two years I could pick the most beautiful flowers and decorate my table with them. If you were not as you are, this beauty wouldn't exist and wouldn't honor our house", she said.

Everyone of us has his own flaws and mistakes but it are the flaws and jumps which make our life so interesting, worthwhile and worth living.
We should take every person as it is and see the good in it.

Note:  I got this nice story as a whatsapp message from a friend in German language. I translated it with my words to English.

  • Exactly, it is a nice story i have already read before too..so simple but inspiring enough to show us the fact that we have many talents even we think we are incomplete and incapable..maybe what we need is just a humble old lady to teach us how to change our perspective :))

Thanks for sharing this inspiring story with us:)

  • A great story. Thanks rose.
  • Dear Emma, these are true and wise words. Perfection is boring, only imperfection makes us feeling unique. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment.

  • Great story, Rose, thanks for sharing!

Imperfection makes us unique and I strongly believe that every defect comes into effect at some point. :)

  • Your comment is as good as the story itself.

    Thanks, Nomi

  • The story has an interesting lesson to learn. While the bowl with the crack helped blossom the flowers, don't forget that the needs of the home was always fulfilled by the flawless bowl. Consider both bowls had cracks; there would have been flowers all around but the house would have been arid.

So sure flaws make your life interesting, perfection works more wonders.

Don't be misled by the lesson that if you have flaws you don't need to correct them, trying to correct the imperfections is equally, rather more important.

    Nice transcript btw

  • Thanks Rahul for you comment. I read this story this morning in German language and there is so much truth within. So I translated the story to share it here. I did not know about the fact that the story is famous.

I hope I did not make too many mistkes in my translation.
