A rare species of dolphin is in the Indus River. That is the pride of Indus. According to Nazeer Virani (the guardian of Dolphins) about 200 kilometers area near Sukur Barrage, there are 30 Dolphins. In another area of the river, there are nearly 1800 to 2000. Unfortunately, these Dolphins are blind because the water of the river is so polluted that light can’t reach underwater. So, it’s impossible to see. That makes Dolphins blind. But they have adjusted themselves by their ecosystem with the surrounding. This is the reason they survive.

They have two flippers that look like a human’s hand that helps them to swim and control their speed. Their sound pitch is different underwater and on the surface of the water. There are 30 to 36 teeth in their jaws, just to grab the food. They eat crabs, small fish, and catfish in the river's depth. They can also hunt by swimming oblique. There is a fat layer under their skin.

Indus Dolphins and the Ganges are different species. Their mostly features are distinct teeth, coloration, skull shapes, and even their growth pattern. Indus Dolphins are endangering species, that's why the government and WHO is protecting them. The battle of survival is going on. If they do not conserve then this beautiful creature will be distinct.

They took many steps to protect the beautiful creature.

1 They prohibited hunting them.

2 They trained the fishers of the river, avoid dolphins while they are fishing.

3 These Dolphins have very weak lungs to breathe and need great care. So, whenever they get trap in shallow water, the volunteers put them back in deep water. They have to keep their eyes on Dolphins.

4 Efforts are going to save the water from pollution by the government, volunteers, and WWF.

By all these efforts, the population of Dolphins is now over 3000.

  •     Wow, really it is a very nice topic and it enlightens us about how to be careful with everything in nature. Thanks for sharing such thoughts with us. God bless you.

  • The Amazon River has similar dolphins; the silt in the river has led to the evolution of blind dolphins.  I am guessing the same is true for yours - the rivers carry a lot of silt or dirt.  Chemical and human waste has probably made the pollution worse but I think even before humans polluted the water, thse dolphins were blind.
