My friends, dear learners, I am really happy to see you are trying to do your best correcting my horrible sentences. But I also see that no one knows how to say the sentence 8 correctly. So, here are my explanations.

If we use the verbs TO WANT/NEED after a subject defining a living thing, they are always followed by the infinitive.  But if a subject is non-living thing, these verbs are followed by the gerund. Here are some examples:

She wants to know the details.

You need somebody to give you some explanations.

Our house needs cleaning.

My car wants washing.

I believe, it is clear.

Now, if we mean that we will do something ourselves, we use the active voice.

I want to fix the engine.

I'd like to check the oil.

It means I will do it myself. However, if we mean that those actions will be done by somebody else (first of all, by different services), we should say:

I want to have the engine fixed.

I'd like to have the oil checked.

I need to have my hair cut.

I must have this stain removed.

You may ask me why and I will answer your expected question. If I come to the barbery and say "I want to cut my hair", some impolite barber may answer "So, do it! Why have you come here?"

Do you see the difference now?

Well, I know that many of you have Master degrees and write articles or books. You WRITE them yourselves, but it is a publishing house that publish them. So, we should say:

I have written many articles

BUT

I have many articles published.

And now, I am ready to answer all your questions and will be happy to see your examples.

Thanks a lot and best wishes,

  • Dear Rose, perhaps you should reread my blog about NEED/WANT as you seem not to get the idea. However, you are learning quickly and you make much fewer mistakes than before. Cheer up! You are a great learner and a great friend!

  • Dear Danny,

firstly: you can ask what you want, it is ok... don't worry. We have our cars washed at the car service, too. Many car wash services offer also the opportunity to wash the car yourself. You you can do it at a separate place of the car wash service.

secondly: I was quite disappointed and even frustrated to see how many of my sentences need correcting before I saw you haven't only corrected my mistakes per se. You showed me how to write the sentences more perfectly. Nevertheless there are too many real mistakes and I really get doubts whether I ever will be able to master English language properly.

    Thanks for you efforts.

  • Dear Rose, here are my corrections. Sure, you can always ask your questions.

Even though my car needs cleaning, I don't want to do it because I am too tired.
I want to have the car cleaned/washed by someone else. While someone else is cleaning my car, I will have a nap on my couch.

Although the remaining mistakes on the last test need correcting, I did not do it until now because I don't know how to correct them/how to do it.

Last week I went to a hairdresser because my hair needed cutting.
I told my hairdresser I wanted to have my hair cut but I don't like to have my hair cut too short. She wanted to know how much she should cut off.

Whenever I visit one of my sisters, she asks me whether her house needs clearing.
I don't know why she asks me because her house is always neat and clean.

Because we had much rain during the last weeks, I want to use these dry days to wash the windows. May I ask you if my windows need_washing?

I want to ask my brother if he likes to visit me. I need to ask him for help because I need to have the sink fixed.

Even though the car had been repaired, I couldn't drive it because the garage staff had lost my car keys. Nobody knew who had lost my keys. So I had to go back home by bus and to bring the spare keys.

I have written a few poems, comments and stories and I posted a few of them__ on EC.
I know __ my publications need correcting. I know it because I know, there are many grammar mistakes ___.

I'd like my mistakes to be mentioned if you don't mind. Please judge my poor grammar skills again because my grammar needs improving.

First of all I will say that we wash and clean our cars. Cleaning means vacuuming inside. When we apply water, we WASH cars, windows, floors, etc. And I have an impolite question: do you wash your car yourself? I mean your people. We have our cars washed at the car service. It is just interesting for me and excuse me if I asked something wrong.

  • Dear Rose, let me see. I will be back in a few minutes.

  • Dear Danny, I used also subordinate clauses in my attempts. I hope I have done it better this time.

Thanks in advance for your effort to read and correct my sentences.
