Sense of humour and your country

Life without fun, laughter - it isn't simply colorful, enjoyable life. Sense of humour reflects what kind of personality is hidden deeply inside of us. I think people who are not so reserved, are capable of making fun  – such people can enjoy their life on the maximum.

Of course, it differs, not all of us have the same sense of humour, not all of us have the talent to tell the jokes so that all the  people around would burst into neverending laughter. On one hand sense of humour can make us popular among the friends or the colleagues, on the other hand if it is offensive sense of humour it can even destroy the friendship. According to the researches some people even prefer the sense of humour to appearance or smartness as for their demands they expect from the partner. Some people say that sense of humour goes with the intelligency but I think that it is individual. In my opinion if the joke is intelligent and people can´t get it because of their poor knowledge or slow way of thinking, in this case we can say here it goes with the intelligency but moreover with general knowledge or ability to understand.

Anyway, chatroom here in EC sort of forced me to start thinking if sense of humour differs due to the countries we live in. What do you think? As some of you know – I am from the Czech republic. I can say that here are many hilarious, funny people in my country and we have even special sense of humour. We are able to make fun of ourselves, we are able to make jokes in the situations others would cry or would be desperate. Our black sense of humour is really tough, not all can get it. It isnt common, I would say. For instance to me if somebody is able to make fun of themself – it shows that they are able to supress their ego, they are able to sacrify their dignity so that other ppl would have fun.

I am aware of one thing - the environment we were raised influenced our sense of humour, if the parents were joking with us when we were the kids, if our classmates were great teasers, it all influenced our personality.

Of course we can´t judge the whole nation due to some individual people so in the end I still think it is 40:60 – individual people versus nationality as for the sense of humour. You can even look up on the internet some charts of the countries with the best sense of humour but I don´t know if it is good idea to generalize it like this.

So if you want to, you can leave the comment here and tell us in short if there is something specific about the sense of humour in your country.

  • I liked your topic and its explanation in different ways.

    Thank for sharing!
  • Hi Luzzi,
We (Spanish) love making fun of ourselves, besides I think that's healthy way to be happy although I also think that we have an inferiority complex :D An example:

    An Israelite doctor says:
Medicine in Israel is so advanced that we are able to remove the testicles of a person, put them to another and in six weeks he is looking for a job.
    A German doctor says:
That's nothing! In Germany we take out part of the brain of a person, put them to another and in four weeks he's looking for a job.
    A Russian doctor says:
In Russia, medicine is so advanced that we take out half of the hearth to a person, put it to another and BOUTH are looking for a job in TWO weeks
    So the Spanish doctor replies:
All you are very backwards! Take note, In Spain, we catch a person with no testicles, no brain and with no hearth put him as our president and half population of the country is now looking for a job. :DDD
  • Thank you all for the comments and for the jokes, which made me laugh :p
  • National Humour:D

    - Mom, am I princess?

    - Son, you are moron!

  • YOU! You stole my thoughts, Luci! ;D Really, your writting is especially like mine (attempt to say: more these articles with Czech "flaws" and articles about humour because I love it).
Anyway... why to write about our humour again, you have already expressed it.:) But when someone asked me what is special on our humour, I couldn't response... probably due I just can not choose the right example, ha! :D Could you?
Btw, I am on the reasearch of humour in another coutries, too - even when I know that it is individual, any percent is there for dividing people to the place where they live in. People influence each other, of course.

  • Oi Luzzi,

You are perfectly right, people from different cultures react differently when it comes to jokes, for instance something that makes an eskimos roll on the snow laughing could just bring a sour smirk on the face of an apache or comanche. It is cool if people can laugh at themselves and take a joke just as a joke without any personal or cultural in-between-the-lines.

I'll take the liberty and post a joke:

Portside tavern in Stockholm, a guy gets kicked out of it and lands in the middle of the street and starts rolling on the cobble stones laughing his head off. A passerby stops and ask why he is laughing. The guy says - They kicked me out and called me a dumb swede! So what's so funny about it?, asks the passerby. The guy, hardly able to contain himself from laughing says - I am a Pole! LOL

  • Sometimes misunderstanding occurred in EC chat room when different level of English comprehension between members clashed. Some members may not understand different nuance of some words being used by some members.

  • I'm really impressed with your writing. I agree because of lack of knowledge people can't really understand a joke, and took your words very personally and react in a way which is offensive.

I don't really know how to deal with such people. Some people call me ignorant because they can't understand my joke. In my opinion these people grade their self up by D grading others.

Shall I care about such people, yes I do care about such people :D

I've a special place for them and that's the ignoring list. I'm really great full to EC admin for providing such a useful tool.

One more thing I'd like to add, as you're aware that in EC we've people from different cultures. Some people are very friendly and open to discuss almost everything.

I've seen many people who reacts differently on same thing, when I'm talking to someone I don't really know how he/she will react. I've received different reactions on same subject from the people.

I think you've to be smarts enough to handle all kind of users to chat...
