Poverty - How It Affects All of Us

I'm certain that there are a lot of poor children who want to learn but they couldn't attend school because:

1. They prefer to work in order to sustain or provide a living for their family.

2. Because of poverty, many women and children are become victims of sexual exploitation and prostitution.

3. Those young children could be the next generation of scientists, educators, or lawyers but have limited access of support because they are living in far away islands and have no means to reach them.

But how does poverty affect us? Basically, it actually affects the whole country to attain social and economic progress. If resources or funds are not used accordingly, (if fall to wrong hands like corrupt public officials) then these resources will be going to waste.

Poverty are linked to various crimes in a community. But what should the government do to lessen the crime rate in a community? I think, education could be one of the best tools to lessen poverty. Providing better job opportunities and livelihood programs to poor families are also good solutions. People should pay their taxes since it is a social obligation to the country. Through these taxes, funds can be provided to help alleviate poverty. Various donations from wealthy and generous people (non-government institutions or charities) are a huge help to poor children especially to those who are living in remote places. I believe a good deed is more than just a personal satisfaction. To see children receiving books, school supplies or funds for their education are extraordinary.

To summarize this, poverty affects a lot of people, in different places and countries. It is saddening to know that this is a reality that human must face. But it could be eluded through determination and unity of every citizen. The roles of public officials are important to help their constituents...

  • Dear Kaoru,

It was good to know that in times of crisis and disasters, foreign aids are administered by different countries to show compassion and sympathy. I liked what you commented on this blog. We should do our best to help, in any form or kind. It's the act that counts and your good intention. I bet you'll be rewarded too by a good karma. Thanks again for showing interest in this blog. May you have a blessed day ahead....

  • Hi SK Aswin,

Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas here. Your comment was impressive too. It's true that poor children are hindered to live their life fully. I admired unsung heroes who help poor people in their own way. Cheers!

  • Hi Expector,

Thank you very much for sharing your comment. There are a lot of factors that need to be consider and from that, the government could formulate ideas (and put it into action) to lessen the alarming rate of poverty. Have a nice week...

  • Hi Robert,

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, as you said, many Japanese people donated their money and volunteered to help people who lost their family, houses, jobs... almost everything. But, you know, a lot of people from other countries also donated their money and came to Japan to help us. That means we can help each other even if we are living far away and have never seen each other.

As you said, we should choose a reputable organization. I got to know about WHP (World Food Program) a couple of years ago. I read an article about School Meals. After reading some articles on their website, I just asked myself.... "Well, so what can I do?".

I think it isn't how much we do, just do what you can do. It's fine.

  • Hello Kaoru,

Thank you so much for taking part of this blog. A little help could be huge to someone needy. I admire your country because of discipline and selfless of your countrymen especially in dealing with crisis just like when a tsunami hit Sendai last March. Here in my country, donations could be given to various organizations, charities and to the local municipalities. I think you can also donate on-line but be wary of fraud and scams. So it is important to be vigilant too. World Health Organization (WHO) has a campaign for poverty which is the world food program, aiming to help children from different parts of the world.

Again thanks for your comment.... Have a great week!

  • Good topic! Some people take wealth or poverty for granted. But we should know why we are poor and try to do something about it.
