Paper is paper

If somebody asked me what do I prefer a book or an ereader I would ansvered imediately paper is paper, a few months ego.

Many people around me are still at the same meaning what I said. For example not only my wife  but also my son has been very good reader. They have read so many books since they learned to read. Many my friends who are in the same age or older as me are still interesting in paper and also have been reading many books. What about me? I read some books what I could count on my fingers of my hand.

We have many kinds of books and their weight is different. Someones are  thick and someones are thin and I don’t want to tell about its height. I remember when our school gave us too many books for studying and we had to carry it to the school every day on our bag. We can say the new books smell very nice but could we say it about the older books? As I know they smell as bad as it gets and what about their dirty pages. If I borrowed a book in a library I was very suprised what I found on the pages. Maybe some readers could read only if they have a breakfest. Letters are only big for kids I mean at fairy tale and then books have only small letters. I remember to my grandmother. If somebody of our family bought to her a book she said very sadly “thank you very much but the letters are too small for my eyes”. How many books are writen with biger letters then as usully for elderly people?

But everything has changed. I have bought an ereader.

I am very happy because not only light but also thin it is. I can put it to my pocket.  I can change the size letters for elderly people. Many, many and so many books I have in the ereader. Not only PDF but also microsoft word I have there from my work what I have to study because of my boss. He wants to have a smart subordinates. Now I can read and study every where on holliday, at work, at home, on train ect.  and every time when I can or I am free. So I can choose which kind of book I need to read that time.

I have found only one disadvantage I can not quickly flip the pages. It means if you want to study law there is very difficult to quickly look up some paragraphs. There I can say paper is paper.

I have been reading many books since I bought the ereader.

  • Oi Vlad,

When I was much younger, I used to read a lot. Many of the books I read have been read a couple of times as I spoke three languages from the craddle, one could say, so I read them in all three languages and always found something new in them.

But with time, I got interested in other activities and books were almost forgotten. I tried some e-books but life outdoors seemed more attractive.

The other reason for forsaking reading books is the internet and videos on different subjects which I am interested in. The advantage of videos is that the subject of interest can be not only described verbally, but also illustrated with some pictures or clips.

Thanks a lot for your interesting blog, it moved a very up-to-date issue for all of us.

  • First and foremost, I would say that despite that the futuristic e-reader has practically more advantages over traditional paper books, like the ability to increase the font size when one gets older, to carry many books all at once, to look for keywords by using the research bar, to read comfortably without using backlight, to cut less trees to make papers...etc, it will never replace physical books as physical books are something so reassuringly solid than ebooks. How can you judge a book by its cover when electronic books have no cover, how can you hold it in your hand so nicely by blowing the dust off the cover and  putting your thumb between two pages while reading it, how can you press a book into a friend's hands saying that they must read it, how can you read a book in a dim half light or beside a candle better than using an integral light of the LCD screen that may hurt your eyes especially in a dark room... I love paper books for many reasons, I do love the smell of the papers, it feels like I'm reading a real book rather than reading a lifeless text from an electronic screen, I can hold, smell, feel and touch it, this is why I prefer physical books over electronic ones.

Notes : I've noticed that there are few mistakes in your writing, Mr.Vlad. For example "Someones are  thick and someones are thin " This utterance is inappropriate by using a personification of a book. Given that a book is not person, you would preferably say "Some of them instead of someones" I hope I gave you a hint. Overall, I really liked your topic and I enjoyed reading it, Thank you for sharing your experience with book preference. :)

  • So do my wife. :D

  • Dear Mr. Vlad, for me nothing beats the book curves, the scent when you open it and the time when you are folding it because your eyes are tired. Sometimes, when you are so fascinated with the story, you accidentally fell it off to your face, especially if you are reading while lying on your bed. But due to some financial reason, we changed materials, now thru gadgets, like what you said ereader, it comes very handy. Thanks for sharing this and hope you'll read more and share more here in EC. God bless.
