OUR TRADITIONS: -NEW YEAR-

Hello, everyone!

Winter has come here and very soon we are going to celebrate the beloved holiday by all people known as New Year. I suppose that every nation has its own way of celebrating and I want to present you our New year style of celebrations.

At first, I want to mention that we have a real new year with tons of snow and icicles here. If you look at the window, you'll see this:

It depends on the family traditions but by the 31st of December all Christmas trees in the houses are ready to get the presents from Father Frost. Actually we don't have Santa Claus here. We have Father Frost with his granddaughter known as a Snowgirl (Snegurochka).

On the 31st of December people start cooking all delicious dishes. The traditional dishes for New Year here include:

1) different meat dishes

2) a lot of salads

3) and of course - a lot of tangerines and chocolate candies

4) cold champagne and red caviar

As for my family, we always cook a salad beloved by all USSR and known as "Olivier' :D

You will need:

- salt cucumbers, boiled potatoes and carrots, boiled eggs, ham, mayonnaise.

Chop everything in cubes, add mayonnaise and feel yourself a part of us :) By the way, I love this salad from my childhood.

Also we cook a delicious meat that is called here "A french meat" (I don't know why by the way) :)

You will need:

- meat (beef or pork), cheese, mayonnaise, onions, tomatoes, salt, pepper, spices.

Chop the meat, add salt, spices. Then chop all tomatoes and onions and put them on the meat. Add mayonnaise and cheese and put it in the oven for 1-1,5 hours. And enjoy!

I remember when I was a child I liked to find these presents next to my Christmas tree:

All these boxes are full of candies (caramel and chocolate) and the weight was around 1-2 kilos :)))) And the biggest happiness for me was to eat all those candies in 2 days))) Because after the New year it wasn't allowed to eat so many candies!

When it was a soviet time here, sometimes we didn't have money for a lot of candies and my mum bought some of them and we put them on the Christmas tree like this:

So, what do you need for New Year in my country?

1) a frosty weather and a lot of snow

2) a big Christmas tree, Father Frost and presents

3) Salad Olivier, Champagne, red caviar, tangerines and other delicious dishes

4) New Year movies from USSR times  :)))) (people who speak Russian know them)

And at midnight you'll be ready to meet 2015 year!)

Happy holidays!

Always yours, Honey bee-e-e-e-e :)

  • I just need the "frosty weather and a lot of snow" and nothing else..
I wish you a very nice Christmas... It's a nice blog, by the way. I enjoyed reading it :)

  •  Danchetta, thanks for answering. Well, here we have Ded Moroz :D My parents made me believe that they were Ded Moroz who brought all presents under the Christmas tree:) Merry Christmas and happy new year too:)

  • While we, in Czech, celebrate the last day in year alias Silvester and everyone is ready to drink and welcome New Year, you Russians prepare for Christmas. Irony of life indeed! :D And I didn't know it! :O Anyway, is Father Frost called Mrazík, too? :D It reminds me the film with Nastenka and Ivan :D And do parents pretend it is Father Frost, not them, who brings gifts? :D Wish you Marry Christmas then! Enjoy it :)

  • Prostokvasha, well the weight doesn't spoil me anyway :) thanks for care :)))

I have a good dentist and I enjoy all foods and pay no attention on silly diets :)

  • Eating all those candies?  Wow, you will surely visit your dentist after that, hahaha!

  • Oh my gosh, those are yummy foods Honey!  You should watch your diet.  I hope that you would still remain as sexy as ever in 2015, hahaha!  My mouth is watery on your salad.  I think I'll have to prepare that one because the ingredients are all available in my place.

Thanks dear for sharing this with us.  My new year doesn't fall on January 1 because I have a different religion.  But we do celebrate our new year, too!

So, happy new year to all of us!

  •  Barbare, and I have. And if I like person for 100% in virtual world, the reality is 100% great :)

  • The New Year celebration is one of the most loved  holidays for Armenians all over the world.

Armenian Families do their best to save money for New Year table. People even do more than they can afford, since it's believed that "You'll spend the year just the way you've welcomed it" and also people will be welcoming guests the following days, so the table has to be as "rich" as possible.

The preparations start weeks before the New Year. People start attacking the food stores and supermarkets, trying to do the shopping beforehand, since the last days many things become more expensive (others like to leave everything till the last moment and the shop owners are earning on it).

    Armenian New Year Table

One of the most important Armenian New Year table "accessories" is the pork leg , but some families also use turkey, little pig or some fish.

Other traditional things for the table are meat snacks , various salads  "olivier", chicken breast with nuts or mushrooms and other), …

On the table you can find pastry (mostly eastern ones - with sweet honey syrup and nuts, since they can stay edible longer because there's no milk cream), fruits (orange, apples, pomegranate, bananas, grapefruits, Apples etc),   various nuts (pistachio, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, etc...), and the sweet sudjukh - walnuts, threaded and soaked in thick syrup of grape or mulberry juice. Dried sweet snacks from all kinds of fruits (sometimes also vegetables) is also a must-have for the table.

Parts of the traditional New Year's meal like various dried fruits, raisins, different kinds of nuts,  and others would have been previously prepared, but the pastries, cakes and harisa would have been prepared on the 30th of December.

One of the most important ant interesting traditions of Armenian new year is Darin (Gata). Darin is a big flat bread, which has a coin hidden in it. The person who found the piece with the coin in it was considered the 'lucky' member of the family for the New Year. But the most remarkable meal is the dolma, which is prepared with rice and grape leaves.
