Oscar and Me, This Year!

I burst into tears when I saw the Academy Film Festival gave the best foreign language award to an Iranian movie called “A separation.”

I do not know why I cried so much. Maybe because I felt we are really forgotten. No one sees us even in the weather forecast of the International news. The meteorologist usually skips over Iran. Not so many people know us. To my surprise, when I took my Canadian citizenship oath, the citizenship officer asked me where Iran is. “Is it Iraq?”

Moreover, when I show some of my Iranian landscape photos to my Canadian friends, they usually say: “Oh, you do have mountains and trees?! I thought you only have deserts and Iran is arid.” Once, I got angry and said: “Do you think we ride camels too?!”

In addition to that, no one knows how difficult it is to make a movie. You can’t make a movie about every subject you want since some subjects must always be ignored. Now, some directors, actors and actresses are in prison. So, making a movie means that you must be cautious and accept its horrible consequences.

All in all, all these wounds and scars in my heart turned into tears when I heard the name of “Iran” on the Oscar. Finally, someone saw us and we are not forgotten. We are not forgotten as long as we believe we can make a change. Finally, someone believed in his power!
