My friends! I'd like to propose you a new challenge with the following phrasal verbs:

to call up - to phone;

to call on - to visit a person;

to call off - to cancel;

to call for - to  come somewhere in order to get someone or something;

to call down - to reprimand, to scould;

to stick to - to adhere/glue to smthg/smbd;

to stick around - to be somewhere around, not far;

to break off - to put the end to the relationship;

As you may see, I am proposing you to wrire about the continuation and the consequences of the first American date! Ha-ha! But I will be happy to read and correct any stories with these verbs. I ask you to post your stories here, OK? It will be easier for us to correct them and for others to read.

Looking forward to your amazing stories!

  • Hi, dear Ka_ty! I am back and here is your corrected story. You know, you can ask me any questions about my corrections, OK?

    Shelly called up her best friend, Lily to talk about her fiance, Ben. She told Lily many interesting things about him. Next day, Shelly and Ben had to (were going to) call onBen’s family. She had called off an important appointment for a family dinner but it was worth it, Shelly felt very happy. Suddenly, her secretary called for her (it is wrong if you mean her secretary entered her office/room at work. It should be “her secretary came in and asked her”) to sign a document calling off the appointment (sounds strange as we don’t sign any documents in such a case, just call the people).

    The next day, they saw many people in Shelly’s neighborhood. Everybody was busy sticking posters to the trees. Many people were sticking around, it was almost like a gathering. When Shelly and Ben came closer to see what people were doing, Shelly had the greatest surprise of her life. There was a flyer wanting Ben for kidnapping a girl and the reward for his capturing was $100 000. When the people saw Ben, they started calling him down while Shelly shouted hysterically at Ben and wanted to break off their wedding. Suddenly, she heard her mum’s voice asking her to wake up. Shelly saw her mum __smiling at her ...It’s only a bad dream/ a nightmare. Her mum asked her to quit her working for a while. It was really stressful to do  two important things at the same time/simultaneously...her marketing job and her wedding that would be (take place) two weeks later

  • My dear Afroza! Yes, REFUSE must be followed by the preposition FROM. As to BEING. The rule is different: TO BE ABLE must be followed by the infinitive with TO, while BEING is a gerund/participle. You can't use it after TO BE ABLE, OK? TOTALLY and COMPLETELY are almost the same. I usually say COMPLETELY is such situations. Your mistake was DENY. This verb is wrong in the situation you described. Let me tell you about DENY. This word must be followed by a gerund. It means we don't admit some fact. For example:

    She denies knowing him (most probably, she lies).

    Yes, we returned from the great two day tour yesterday night, but we are still at the resort in the Carpathians. I will save the pictures for my future blogs. We are planning to go to Kiev at the end of the week but here, at the resort, we are able to use the internet and will be online.

  • Thanks! So, you both got back from the excursion? Well, Most probably I got your point.So, refuse should be followed by a preposition, right? And, there is a rule to use being....we should use being for a certain period not for a permanent reason, am I correct?

  • Dear Afro! As I told you I had got the general idea of the last sentence. Look, "was not being able to refuse Brad" is incorrect. The correct is "wasn't able to refuse from Brad". So, using the given idioms, we can say:

    Though she wanted to break loose, she couldn't (wasn't able to) refuse from Brad totally(completely) or she wasn't able to break off their relationship completely.

  • Dear Danny, in my last sentence I meant Liana wanted to escape but was not being able to refuse Brad completely ( as She loved him though later found he was an alien!).

  • Wow! I am so glad I was right! Ha-ha! And, it is just Dan, OK? I will correct your story in a few days, if you don't mind as we are going to join  two day tour tomorrow morning. If I am able to do it today, I will.

  • Hello Mr Clark...

    Thanks for the reply.Yes,it was Shelly who was getting married. Next time, I will call them by names and yes, reward for finding Ben:) Have a great weekend too, Mr Clark:)

  • Dear Ka-ty! Before correcting your story, I'd like to clarify a few poins. As far as I understand, it was Shelly who was getting married, right? The matter is that when you tell about two or more women/men, you should call them by names otherwise you mix up your story. The second question is: what do you mean by " a reward"? Was it a reward for finding Ben and giving him in charge? And your story is really interesting. In fact, I am so pleased reading all your fantacies here!

    Have a great weekend!

  • Thank u Mr Clark:)

           Shelly called up her bestfriend, Lily to talk about his fiance, Ben. She told her many interesting things about him. Tomorrow, Shelly and Ben will call on Ben’s family. She had called off an important appointment for the family dinner but it was worth it, Shelley was a very happy lady now. Suddenly, her secretary called for her to sign  a document since she could’t make up for the appointment.

       On the next day, they saw many people on Shelly’s neighbourhood. Everybody was busy sticking  posters to the trees. Everyone was sticking around, it was almost like a gathering. When Shelly and Ben went near to see what they were doing, Shelly had the greatest surprise of her life. It was Ben’s picture with a reward for $100 000 for kidnapping a girl. When the people saw Ben, they called down at him while Shelly shouted hysterically at Ben and wanted to break off their wedding. Suddenly, she heard her mum’s voice asking her to wake up. Shelly saw her mum was smiling at her ...It’s only a bad dream. Her mum asked her to break loose from her work for awhile. It was really stressing doing two important things at once...her marketing work and her wedding that would be held in two week’s time....

  • Hi, Eve, hi, my dear ladies! I am just happy it is raining so heavily here! ha-ha! So, I am allowed to stick to the screen!

    Well, my dear Angel! If your story were about me, I would be happy! I am that Mr. Duck who wants to get rid of his duties and to be himself at last. On the other hand, i'd like my Mrs. Duck always to be by my side.

    Thank you all for your great stories! We will be back with our tricky assignments soon! ROFL!
