Dear friends! I will tell you about these problematic adjectives and how to use them correctly. We use them differently with/as singular and plural nouns. Besides, these adjectives can be used as nouns, both singular and plural.

1. Singular: another and the other.

Another means any other. We use it if there are more than two similar objects.

He is from another city. (There are more than two cities in the world)

My pen is out of ink. Will you give me another, please? (There are a few other pens on the table).

The other means the last one. Such a situation may occure when there are only two objects we speak about or we have already said something about all of them except the last.

There are two pens on the table. One of them is red, the other is black.

Two friends met and one of them asked the other.....

There are three pens on the table. One of them is red, another is blue, the other is black.

Speaking about liquids, powders or something like that we also use the other meaning the rest.

The water in the glass is warm. The other in the jug is icy.

2. Plural: others and the others.

Others mean some part of the rest while the others mean all the rest.

There are 10 cars in the parking. Some of them (for example, 4) are red, others (3) are white, the others (3) are black.

And now, I propose you to write some very short stories or some sentences using these words correctly.

  • Dear Mishaikh! Here is your corrected story:

She left me as if I had been from another planet. She left without giving me another chance to explain why I wasn’t there as I had promised. That day I had received two calls: one for an interview and the other from her for a tryst.  There were three options for me. One was to ignore either of the two calls, another was to ignore her call, the otherwas to visit the interview.  I didn’t have enough time to inform her to put off the tryst. As a result, she left me as if I had been an alien.

I'd like to make a few comments.

    1. I have underlined the word "a tryst"not to forget to tell you that in American English it isa date.

    2. All English sentences must have predicates.

    3. When you speak about something unreal, contradicting reality, you should use The Subjunctive Mood. I mean two expressions about an alian and another planet.

Of course, you can ask the questions about my corrections.

  • Here is my attempt Tanya:

  • Dear Risty! I am really sorry for my late reply, but I am so busy in my real life now. Here is your corrected story. You can surely ask your questions about my corrections (they are underlined).

It was a busy street in downtown Manila, I walked in the narrow alley of Divisoria, one of the busiest areas in Manila, but except  Divisoria, there are other spots in Manila that can be considered to be the busiest. Baclaran is one of themanother is Monumento and the other is Tondo. Back to my adventure, I'm looking for a cotton shirt as my material for printing design_. My friend told me I can find some cheap ___ textiles. I talked to different stores and stocks to find my desirable goods. As I entered one store after another, one woman approached me and told me about their commodities.  She showed me all classes of the cotton shirts and told me about the difference in their prices. One item caught my eyes. In comparison with other brands it was of good quality. But the price was a bit high in comparison with  another brand.

  • It is really interesting to think that while there is sunny daylight, the other part of the word is still in dark! But, it is no more interesting when some people are enjoying the maximum benefits and on the contrary others are struggling to survive and the others have nothing to survive.

Dear Teacher Tanya, I'm not sure about this one, hope you will correct my attempts for this challenge. Thank you.

  •  Dear Teacher! Thanks a lot for the recorrections. I highly appreciated it .

  • Dear Simran! Unfortunately, I have to say you haven't got how to use these words correctly. Please, read the corrected story and ask me the questions. I will explain you again.

Sara was a little girl. She was used to playing with dolls. One day when she was playing one of her dolls was broken. She started crying and came up to her mother with other_ dolls. Her mother took her __to the toy store where Sara saw so many dolls. She wanted to have all the dolls but her mother told her to choose only one. Sara picked out three dolls. One had the red hair, another had black and the other had brown. Her mother bought them for her. Sara was happy to return_ __home __ with the dolls. She started playing with the doll in the park. Her mother came up to her with two cup. One cup was with milk and the other was with juice. Her mother went to the kitchen. When Sara was about to have some milk her friend Rosy came up to her and sat down beside her. Sara gave her the other cup of juice. Sara sipped a little milk  and the cup slipped out of her hand. The other__ milk spilled on the grass. They started playing with the dolls. Sara gave her (the) other_ three dolls to play and she started playing with them. They played happily. Sara had no other friends. She had only one friend, Rosy. So she loved her so much .

  • Dear Luci! Your story is not stupid at all. It is quite didactic and full of common sense. Sure, you can ask about my corrections. Here they are:

Once upon a time there were three friends. Two of them went to school by bus__, while the other went with his parents by car__. One day a new, very smart boy from another city joined their class. Some of the classmates were confused, others felt strong competition in the air, the others wanted to make friends with him. Our three friends decided to have another friend, to give him a chance__ to make their "gang" bigger :) However, that boy was too arrogant, rude and considered the others to be stupid, he didn't care if there are other kids, who might have been hurt or offended. Eventually, after some months he was alone without friends avoided by others. This is the end of my another stupid story.

  • Dear Simran! We can't use THE OTHER without THE if it is singular. I will post my corrections very soon.

  • Dear Luci and Simran! Tanya will correct your stories a little later.
