Music versus videos

Music versus videos

Today in the morning I suffered from the big cultural shock!! I watched Lady Gaga's latest video clip and didn't believe my eyes! Maybe I am too old, puritan, maybe I was raised in the different way but seriously to watch a video where singer prefers showing their half-naked body and music is there just something like coulisse, it didn't impress me at all. Honestly it made me feel disgusted and I really despise "artists" like this.

Lately I found out that such videoclips are almost common and I wonder what we or our kids will be watching in upcoming years. Are there any limits?

Singer should sing and I am just asking myself how come ten or fifteen years ago we watched something totally different, nice in the video clips  and now if there isn't any half-naked body part, it doesn't rock? I don't believe that music industry bottomed out so rapidly. In my opinion it all started  because  the singers who were unable to get attention only by their voice, such singers had to  come up with something "special" - something really cheap. Anyway, believe it or not - they became popular and their style started being trendy. Sad point of it is that even those who can sing good are now sort of forced to follow this "new fashion" to keep their popularity. I am sure that men enjoy such show where female singers present their body - actually it is made for them but I am curious to see such men as fathers answering to their kids the questions like: "Dad, why is this woman half-naked there and moving like this? It looks weird to me."  Should they react : "Ohh, better don't watch it, it isn't for the kids."

So if one day the video clips are only for the adults and we will be scared of turning on the channels like MTV since the kids are in the room, I think that one day some of us will realize that such situation simply reflects the degradation of the society we live in.

  • Bia, I like your way of thinking. You tried to find something positive about it. You know such idea has been for long time on my mind, but this video was the last drop, so I decided to share it..

Stranger, stop scaring me with your gif :-D anywayz, funny one :-p

Sevil, yeah I agree and Miley is the seond one so called artist :-) It is just sad that something like this went so far..

Mr. Bob, I like your expression lowest common denominator! thanx for your comment and for liking this topic :-)

  • Sad but true. In many ways the "popular music industry" is more interested in popularity than music. I think to reach the most paying customers they are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It is the kind of thing I would not want my small kids or anyone's small kids watching.

  • hey Luzzi, why are you surprised by the video only?..have you listened carefully to her lyrics?..about God.....holy crap...no comments....its really disgusting from the point of moral and human rights....the whole video and the song should be censured by all means...but LETS TAKE A LOOK OF IT FROM ANOTHER SIDE....lets find good points in their ''art'' too...for example the video G.U.Y.....hmmm....it is call artpop and there is really a lot of art there.....she's a good artists and a good team of professionals work for/with her, but not in the sense of creating music....she's the worst singer that i have ever seen.....she's just attracting attention in many and all possible ways ....lets take her as she is....

once they talk her ancestors might have been armenian, and i don't even want to think about it, i feel shame for her....but in the point of avangartist singer she could have had some value....who knows!

  • sharma - thanx for your great comment it feels good to force you to think of this issue - honestly, m scared of the future as well as for such kind of industry..

Ali, this gay has even breasts, so i think you are wrong :-D

noas, yeah exactly, the worst about is that it is just matter of money. Media show it because it is all one big business. And if somebody would say something against it, they would consider them dictator with cenzorship.. thats really sad.. miley is the best example - agree

Tree.. yeah I will  :-D actually i dont even watch videos so often, after long time i did and got almost heart attack

Rysz.. old Romans were the best and your comparison is really great. We appreciate more materialistic things - those we can see.. than hidden ones.. in this case it might be the voice of singer instead of her body.. i like the way you wrote it!!!

  • Oi there,

Luzzy has a good point in her blog, yet I would rather argue that we do not evaluate the achivements of the ancient Roman Empire solely by the mayhem of the cruel, glatiators' "show" - they are mare fodder for the masses. We admire and marvel at the construction of the Coloseum, the architectonical beauty of the buildings and monuments. The ancient Romans layed out the fundaments of our present law and philosophy, not to mention their achievements in the field of art and literature. There always was a parallel world in every stage of our human history....like the coin with two sides... Our contemporaty history is full of magnifecent achievements of human mind and its ingenuity. I would dare say that there was always classical art and music along with folk art and music, sometimes they are not completely compatible, for some people, of course.

As the ancient Romans used to say - Tempora mutantur et nos mutamur in illis - Times change and we along with it.

  • In this case I just listen to music (if it is good) instead of watching videos. I cannot see the art work in the way singers show off their bodies too much.

  • Some these so called 'singers' are using the 'shock' values to sell their mediocre talents. But what's so unfortunate is, media are selling these shock values to increase their popularity. It's more unfortunate that these so called singers are being idolised by millions of young people. Case point, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus.

  • Yeah half naked gay looks disgusting :D

  • You can't really write awesome comments again and again :D
