Mona Lisa is a portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy during 16th century. The painting is currently owned by government of France and is on display at a museum in Paris, France.

Mona Lisa is considered as the most famous painting in the history of arts and it is widely recognized around the world.

Her true identity has not been successfully disclosed yet. There are many opinions about her. Some experts even believe that Mona Lisa is actually its owner Leonardo da Vinci himself. However, majority of experts believe that painting depicts a lady named Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine merchant. But her exact identity is still unclear.

Many people worldwide are fascinated by the painting and consider it as a masterpiece. Mona Lisa's smile is a source of inspiration for many.

I know this painting since my early childhood and I've literally seen it a thousand times. It is very well known every where in the world. However, personally I've never found her smile attractive (or whatever you call it - beautiful, inspiring, mysterious, or enigmatic). I always wonder why people are so mad about her smile? What is the reason? How people could see a mystery behind her smile? But I've never found an answer to my questions.

So today, I would like to ask you people;

1. Are you a fan of Mona Lisa? If yes, why?

2. Do you find her smile attractive/cute/beautiful/enigmatic ? If yes, why?

3. Do you think there is a mystery behind her smile? If yes, why?

Please Note : If you're a fan of Mona Lisa, please don't be offended by my post. It 's my very personal opinion (and I think everybody has right to think about things as they want). The reason behind publishing this post is that I'm very curious to know about other people's opinions. And I respect all people's opinions so don't hesitate to respond to my questions.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read my blog. Thanks in advance for your valuable(yes, they are very valuable for me) comments!

  • hi dear nida,

you know..it was my quastion too,and some time i was thinking of it:

why this painting is so famous all around the would? and

what lie down at the root of this painting?

    i don't know...

  • Hello, dear Nida!

Wonderful blog! I'g glad, that you wrote about this masterpiece of Great Leonardo! I like this painting too, but I think - to have it (original or reproduction) in home is very not desirable. The smile of Mona Lisa is such strange, it seems to me mocking, derisive... I am very busy with my work, I am very tired, weary and I don't want, that Great Mona Lisa looks at me ironically! :-))) But I like look at face of Mona Lisa sometimes. I look and think, that this mystery is great one!

Also, I think, people never know about mystery of Mona Lisa's smile. :-) And it is right! Mystery must be mystery! :-)

Dear Nida, tank you very much for your interestimg blog!

I wish you great success and happiness! You are very erudite person!

Exuse me, I write you seldom! But I always remember about you! :-)

    With love,

    Inga.

  • I like this painting. Her smile is special. That's why some people say she is also crying and when I look at it, I don't know, for some reason, I think she is sad and someone forced her to smile. This is how I feel when I look at it.
  • No, i am not a fan of Mona Lisa's smile. I have never understood why this painting became so famous. There are many others who for me, are far better.

No i don't find her smile mysterious, beautiful, attractive or blablabla. It's just a smile as we can see on many other paintings. To my opinion, Leonard de Vinci painted better canavas than this one. But of course it's very personal. I believe critics made this painting famous but critics are always subjective.

  • What the interesting topic you chose, dear Nida!

I am not a fan of this portrait and I dislike this style of painting, I can only note the landscape behind her. Behind her a vast landscape recedes to icy mountains. Winding paths and a distant bridge give only the slightest indications of human presence. Combination of real and unreal, increase an impression.
    thanks for sharing:)

  • I saw the real picture when I was visiting Paris. I wish I were an artist!
  • hi nida, you're truely genious to bring forth such a discussion, I bet most  people who will read your post are going to agree with you about this crazy monalisamania, I guess many others, including me asked themselves the same questions you asked here and couldnt find the answers to them, however I'll follow the comments, I'm curious to find people who can answer them
  • I agree with you personally. My wife student of History says that Leonardo da Vinchi drew the painting by only seeing her feet. His imaginary power was so strong. That is why the painting is popular.
  •  I'm agreeing you Nida this opinion, because many reasons.

Foremost, the paint or draw is just a mirror appears some corners are combined between our life and emotions, and nothing is weird or paranormal even if the painter is free in his/her imagination to depict blend of real traits and fiction, but the purpose is one and existed ( Expressing our real hardship, happiness, marvel, love, hate, sufferance, or brave........), i know the cleverness varies from a painter to another, beside i like watch their performances as a kind of entertainment or enjoyment, not as selomning or overetimate the portrait such as my parents and maybe more.... that push me to waste my time with frezen things which do not add to world and life avails and development.

Secondly, as you said Nida Mona Liza  portrait is just a normal depiction to a woman's smile, maybe what was disciminated it, the way of painting and the tools that has been made by. However, this thing does not give us to sanctify it while this portrait gives us a normal form of girl with a weird look which you can interpret it to many assumptions, and maybe its historical tense increase its value!!! but the only thing i wonder in, why the portraits become expensive more than the human himself, whilst the human being who is drawed in those performances and expressing his inners. Here you can know the colonisation take several of forms which dominates at art and made it profitable bussiness. On contract, The bussinessmen faded the beauty and luster when the  art was distincted by!!!

Finaly, I'm sorry Nida i could not to answer your questions because i'm as you, confused in art rule newdays and how this independent domain has become under bourgeois hands while the painters were are still most of them poors!!!!

Thank you Nida for this sweet post and wonderful implying :)

    Secondly,
