I can call myself a great lover of cinema, and, naturally, I've seen a lot of good and not very good films...Now, I'd like to tell you about one of my favourite films "American Beauty"(1999)directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball. Kevin Spacey stars as a main character Lester Burnham. The film was nominated for and won many awards and honors. Why do I love this film? First of all, for a significant social and moral message that is being conveyed by a film. I'm not going to retell the plot - just you should see it! In my view, the main issue, shown in this film, is misunderstanding.American Beauty is a story of two families suffering from constant pique between all the family members. For example,Lester's daughter despises her kind and gentle father. Once, she said: " I need a father who's a role model, not some horny geek-boy... Somebody really should put him out of his misery." Her boy friend Ricky replied:"Want me to kill him for you?" Jane:" Yeah, would you?"And when, at last, the characters had realised their grievous errors, a fatal accident occured. And the reason for it, once again, was misunderstanding between them!I haven't covered all the peculiarities of this film, I haven't told about the beauty lost by the heroes, but actually having it in their own hearts. I just want you to be interested in the movie and see it. As for those who have already seen it, I'd like to hear their opinion.

  • Hi dear Inga,
I have nothing to say! Thanks for adding some new ideas to my blog!
You ask" Why do people like cruel and brutal persons?" After watching this film, I think some of such "lovers"will be thinking of life, its rules and role models that they choose to follow... And they'll take a good look at their family and friends...
  • Hi Reiziuh,
I see you have supplemented my short review with new details! The crises at the middle-age is the problem that excites many people. And the director of the film managed to elucidate this issue in all its aspects. Thanks for your immediate response!
  • Hello, my dear friend Natasha!
Thank you for your great blog!
I have seen the film "American Beauty" (the director Sam Mendes) about four years ago. This movie has the very ironic title - I’d call it “The American Tragedy”. But then the intrigue would disappear (vanish).
It is a real film-tragedy. Though it is starting like a funny movie, and elements of comedy are its part.
Natasha, you are right! Really, one of the main issues, shown in this film, is misunderstanding. But in my opinion, the main issue – the doom of honest, decent, kind, careful and loving person among selfish, egoistical, cruel, brutal people. The real love is unprotected in our world. The honest is nonsense. The decent is foolishness. You should be “a role model” or you will be destroyed.
Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) was killed by one of his immediate relatives or friends, because he was honest, careful, loving…
This film shows us the absurdity of our life. Why do people like cruel and brutal persons? It is a great riddle!
What else attracts my attention? It is sincerity of the main character, sincerity like during confession. The hero of Kevin Spacey arouses sympathy and commands respect, though he isn’t a superman! He is an usual person, which loves his family and friends. It is possible owing to working of the script writer and director. And, of course, thanks to Kevin Spacey!
I think every thoughtful person should see this film, even if he disagrees with the authors of this movie.

    Thank you very much!
  • Hi s.a.bawazire,

  • Hi Monika,
At last ther appeared somebody who had seen this movie! I see you really like this film - so good you analyse it and even quote from the film. Thank you for your interesting comment!
  • Hi Natasha!
It's a great film,I saw it and like it very much.
I like it as the films begins, and Lester-a genetic loser(as he tells himself)- summerizes up his life story and give us an idea about his environnement, family and himself.
Sam Mendes just could't pick better carachters for the plot,Kevin Spacy was a perfet choice(!).
I like Lester's comments during the film as this one:
"Weirdest thing,I feel like I've been in coma for 20 years and I'm waking up just now....."
This film is ironical,I laughed a lot.
I saw more than once,a really good film, worth to see it.
