Live and become.

Dear friends, it's late, I don’t usually write at this hour of the night because I lack concentration, but I just saw a film on television, a film that moved me so much that I need to talk about it. In my life, partly because of my profession, I have seen many heartbreaking stories, but i have never been so troubled by what I just saw tonight. I wonder why this movie upsets me so much as it is a fiction. Maybe over time, I became too sensitive to any injustice shown in "Live and Become" The soundtrack is also beautiful and i guess it adds an emotional side to the movie. Here is the summary of this very touching movie. If you have the chance to watch it,don’t miss it and, please, let me know what you think about it. That kind of film is very valuable as it makes us deeply think about what we can, each do, to make the world a better place to be.Live and become realized by Radu Mihaileanu. In 1980 the black Falashas in Ethiopia are recognised as genuine Jews. In turn they are secretly carried to Israel. The day before the transport the son of a Jewish mother dies. In his place and with his name (Schlomo) she takes a Christian 9-year-old boy. Upon arrival this second mother dies. Schlomo is adopted by a good family but remains depressed until he secretly sends a letter to his real mother. From the beginning he experiences large and small racist difficulties. In his teens he and Sarah fall in love. Her father is an extreme racist. Schlomo tries to gain "real Jewishness" by winning a competition in Bible interpretation. No change of Sarah's father's attitude. Disappointed he goes to the police and reports himself as not being a Jew. But the police officer just gives him a scolding. "The newspapers are full of that stuff, the Falashas are no Jews. Now they begin to believe it themselves." His adoptive parents send him to France to study medicine. When he afterwards marries Sarah she loses her family and her status as a "white Jew". But he dares not tell her the truth until she becomes pregnant. She leaves him, but only because he had not trusted that she would love him as much anyway. His adoptive mother reconciles them. Sarah's first line when she returns: "Unbelievable what three mothers would do for you." But she makes a condition for returning: Schlomo must meet his real mother again. As a doctor he takes a job in the Ethiopian fugitive camp where she is still alive.Written by Max Scharnberg, Stockholm, Sweden

  • Hello dear Irina,

Well, it was worth for me but, fortunately, i am not sure we will all react the same way to it. If you have the opportunity to see it, please let me know what you think about it. Thanks for your interest here.

  • Dear Ramona,

As you wrote, Mihaeleanu was born in Roumania. He realized a few other good movies, but "Live and become"  is, for me the best one .

Thanks for reading and commenting this blog.

  • Dear Anale,

I have been convincing because i was convinced  :)) Thanks for stopping by.

  • Dear Nebia,

I hope you will find that film and i will be happy to have your opinion about it. Thanks for your comment here.

  • Hello Nafis,

I can understand your reaction about this kind of movie. I should probably stay away from them too, but i just can't. It's something that helps me to grow and make sense of things. To work as a volonteer nurse in deprived areas should have made me less vulnerable, but even if i have seen so much misery around me, my heart is still as sensitive as the first time a child died in my arms.

Thanks for your interest to my post dear Nafis.

  • Hello Manuela! You gave us a magnificent portrayal of the film.I guess, this film is worth seeing by all means. Be blessed, my friend.
  • Oh dearest a very moving story. Unfortunately I haven't watched yet but I will try to find a dvd of it here.

Thank you for sharing this emotional blog with us dearest.

  • Dear Manuela, Thanks a lot...I also became so sensitive and therefore, a defensive mechanism for me is I ignore very serious movies since I'm seeing so many drama in my real life. And, don't have the capacity to accept extra. This is also from those movies that I cry from the beginning to the end but I think it worth watching. I hope you never be upset. I learned from one of my Indian friends that we have to be in mud but not be muddy! It's exceedingly difficult!!!
