LEAVING MY COUNTRY

I am leaving my country to move overseas. I will miss all of my friends here while I am away from the internet. My wife and I have an entire house to empty so we can let others live here while we are gone. I am spending many hours every day getting ready. There is so much to do when leaving your country. Many things have to be sold and others put in storage, or given away for someone who can use them. We will recycle all the unusable items, of course.Other than that, I have very busy times ahead, such as deciding what I can bring with me in the limited space of an airplane.A few books, clothes, and of course my laptop? My wife will follow in a few weeks with her items. What would you take if you had move away and were going to be gone for a few years?Keep in mind you can have one small carry-on bag and a larger bag or trunk in the luggage compartment of the plane.Seriously, what would you bring and what would you leave?Maybe you can help me with your suggestions. Weight and space are both a problem. As an English teacher, I must bring some of my books. What else should I try to squeeze into a trunk?I will not be able to answer your comments, but I will try to get to see your suggestions.I will tell you where I am after all of my visa and other papers are approved. Maybe English teachers are too undesirable :) for immigrants, so I will be quiet about the final destination until we both have arrived. :)))Thank you for any suggestions!

  • Hello Bob,
Your message made me very curious ! You are so lucky to be an english native, it means you can almost find a job as teacher in every countries of the world ! Please let us know where you will finaly land :))
When i moved out from Belgium, i didn't take much. My favorite books, some pictures of my family, some cds (now, all this is in the laptop) and my favorite clothes. Nothing else !

But Bob, I think that, what we should bring when moving out fo the country is also depending a lot on where we go. For example, when i went to Afganistan a few years ago, i took a bunch of my favorite toothpaste tubes because i knew i would not find them there !

You might need an "electricity transformer-adaptator" as it is not always easy to find one when arriving in the foreign country.
Maybe your wife will like to take her favorite spices, or some specific products she won't find to cook there.

Well, anyway, i guess that when you will finaly be in that new country, you will, as most of us, think about things you haven't brought and that you should have :))

Wishing you all the best in your new life.
    Manuela
  • May I ask you a question, emmm......why were you leaving your country? Ok! Just wondering, but that's not the point and I will wish you. I know you must be very confused now, you have a lot of luggage, if you can't take them together once, maybe you could express them or take them next them.
I think you will work out a good idea.
  • Hello sir,

So this is the reason why you weren't very active here, lately. All my best wishes for you & your family, and I hope you'll be settled there without any difficulty.

As far as what to bring, the first thing, I think is visa & passport , as you're moving to another country. Other things include, educational & office documents, some clothes, books which are necessary for your job, cell phone, laptop, medicine(if someone is using them), credit cards. Your wife might want to bring her jewellary(if she likes to wear it). I think that's all.

Happy journey, I hope you'll keep in touch. WE all miss you a lot. You are someone, who is always always, very kind to all of us.

All my prayers with you. Wishing you & your family, a happy and healthy life.

Good luck & may God bless you!
  • I wish you a happy journey my friend
nice to inform us about ur leaving
and thank god that there is a laptop to be in touch with us ..
    Good luck Bob
  • Great idea for a blog post, Bob! I can't wait to hear more from you once you are settled safely at your destination.
    Re: What I'd bring:
I'd bring my laptop, my iPad, my glasses, my family, my important ID, my hopes and dreams and a positive attitude! (Maybe some photocopies of that ID and as USB drive!) It's nice to know that you can bring this big family of MyEC with you wherever you travel. Stay in touch Bob! Thanks for all you do for this club.
  • I used to think you are more into engineering and so on. Good luck to you!

    To your 1st question:
    - a computer, a phone, clothes, a camera, a dictionary, removable flash drive, perfume, hairbrush, and resumes/CV if you will be looking for a job.
  • If your going to the tropics , swim wear clothes fit for the tropics , not forgetting suntan , caps whatever.
Books and do not forget your laptop , you have to say you are fine after reaching your destination.
    Good luck and happy journey!
