Some of my English students whom I’ve met online, especially on chat, address me as Darling, Honey,  Madam, or Ma’am.  These are incorrect words to use because they imply a kind of relationship that does not exist.  Darling and  Honey are only appropriate for a romantic relationship. Many women would feel insulted if you use these words.  Madam or Ma’am, which is short for Madam, have a different connotation.  Historically, they were used to show respect for teachers, business associates,  and sometimes for your mother or grandmother.  They are not used much in those ways any more.  There a few exceptions.  Sometimes people from the southern part of the US still say ma’am to their teachers or to people with whom they do business.  They consider it a sign of respect.

Many people today, including me, use an informal style.  You can just call me Pauline.

Important vocabulary words from this article:  appropriate, connotation, associates.  Look up their definitions if you’re not sure about their meaning.

  • Nadira, What country do you live in?  I like the fact that people in your country respect teachers.

  • Suad, calling a teacher Miss Pauline is often done here, especially by kids and their parents.

  • Nadira,

I like what you said about romantic words.

Where are you from?  I like the way many cultures, but not American, give teachers extra respect..

  • It  does  sound  ridiculous  when  one is called in romantic terms ....Your  topic is a good eye opener  to those of  whom who do not  follow  the rules

  • Sima, we have a cultural difference here.  The word "honey" is usually used by men talking to their girlfriend or wife.  It would make most Americans feel uncomfortable.
