How Much Do You Know About A Person

First, Let me ask you who is your closest person to you? It can be your wife, husband, son, daughter, mother, father, a friend and so on. Answer this question by keep a name on your mind.

Second, think of everything you know about him/her. Make it on percentage, what is the result? 80%, 90%, alright, thanks for your participation. Here comes the third part

Having a lesson of human assumption, a teacher of mine taught us how much a man suppose to know about another human. If we make it into percentage, what we know about someone will be no more than 50%, why? Here is the formula,

  1. 25% ; the amount of things about that person which is known by both of you and that person.
  2. 25% ; the amount of things about that person which is only known by you, that person doesn’t know. These things usually be founded in people gossips.
  3. 25% ; the amount of things about that person which is only known by him/her. You don’t know. Also known as personal secret. And,
  4. 25% ; the amount of things about that person neither you and that person know about. Sometimes it called by ‘Dark side’, because even that person is not aware of it. Only God and nature know, maybe.

So, guys!! what do you think? Do you agree or have another opinion? ;)

Thanks for reading^^

  • Could it be, it all rather depend on personal perception. thanks for dropping by Syed Faisal Ali^^

  • If the concern person is unaware of something, then it shouldn't be consider in calculation.

As you explained above almost 50%, i'll consider it 90%.

  • @Marry,. It's serious off course, lol xD but not being used commonly, just for the sake of research. You know how statistics deal with numbers even though we are having qualitative one. And we need percentage to define a reliability of the result.
@Eva,. Agree or not, this formula is helping a lot while conducting a research. And the result, more or less, influence our daily life -by science and theory invention, modern stuffs etc-
I know it's rude to judge someone by this formula. May not work at all. But human being share similarities and differentiates in different degree of each person. but collectively, we are completing each others which means the final result will be always 100%.
  • @Risty,. Hehehe... Please don't take this seriously especially to judge someone. We will use this formula for many people when we are managing an interview to collect the data.
  • Well, I feel this is not really like a 'serious formula' but just an excuse to talk about how much we know about other people and how much we know about ourselves as well. Like the MacGuffin technique in movies. It's very interesting tho :)

Btw, about the 4th point, I've a rough idea how is my 'dark side' XD

  • Hello there Pepps! Don't you know that this is quite difficult to assess? This is somewhat qualitative and things which we can't put in numbers are not easy. :D
I'm wondering, this could fall under the Psychological hypothesis, but your Prof there was a Philosophy grad, hmmm... the subject for psychology for that course is not as comprehensive as the course itself. Actually, I found myself dumb if I will apply this to my best friend as she has so many surprises. I think she thinks the same thing about me. Waaaaaahh!! what formula should I use to having the 100% so I can discern the other percentages? Hahaha!
I realized I'm a bit brainless with regards to this. :D

  • @Mr. Jeffrey,. Thanks for your analytical questions^^

I agree it's important to know about the source of something for it's validity and reliable context. I apologize for not mentioning his name, but he held high position in my university. a teacher of Philosophy of science and ICT. He has three degree in different fields of English at very young age, even his tittle is longer than his name. has multi talents and almost all of students either love or hate him at same time, lol. so there is no doubt about his quality.

the second question, I know it is true because we are talking about how to conduct a research, quantitative one, so it's about how we collect data to be exact. not a common thing we talk about everyday, what is the use anyway? at least we are -especially me- not too judgemental since that day, there are more of things we don't know than we do know.

  • @Luci,. Thank you for your opinion, I highly appreciate it^^

about the gossip thingy, maybe that's not true at all. but at some point there are things that our beloved person knows more than ourselves. for example my mum knows what I like to eat rather than my self, I think this is the better concept rather than gossip, lol xD

  • Peppo, interesting points ... here are my points as for your pecentages..
    1. I fully agree
    2. I fully disagree because I think it is imposdible to characterize somebody on the basis of gossips (which might be unrealistic)
    3. Fully agree
    4. Disagree as I am atheist.
To sum it up I would say it is easier to me because as for knowing somebody it is how I percieve this person mostly on the basis of their actions, I wouldn't be influenced by rumours - I need to make my own and ofc we all have some hidden private secrets we simply don't want to share and it is in my opinion our personal thing...Nice post ;)
