My dear friends and fatnastic students! As I see you like such a blog more than others, I decided to hold it over and to complicate your task. This time, you should find the right synonym, that is a single word.

For those who are new here, all the rules and conditions are here:

http://www.myenglishclub.com/profiles/blogs/english-idioms-looking-for-synonyms

So, here are five other sentences. And remember, please, you should replace the idioms with the only one word.

1. My lawyer promised not to let me down.

2. I always foot my bills.

3. He always finds fault with others.

4. The superviser called her down for being late.

5 A very pleasant woman waited  on me in the Red Lobster yesterday.

These expressions are easy to guess. Just pay attention to the situation and the words we use.  And your answer should be the only one word. Good lucK!

  • Yes, dear Elen! "To wait on" means "to serve" at a restaurant or a store.

  • Ohhh, as I understand from your words, I wait on someone means I serve?

    I couldn't imagine that!

  • Dear Elen! If you happened to look up the answer, it is not a problem. We are not at school here! Ha-ha! The idea is for you to know as many phrasal verbs as possible. And now you know that "to find fault with" means "to critisize". So, you have succeeded. As to No5. My example is rather tricky, I agree. But I have already explained what I was doing at that restaurant. I just wanted to have dinner. So, I will ask you a direct question: what is the first basic duty of a waiter/waitress? Just pay attention to the root of this word: wait. So at the restaurants waiters wait on us, they bring us meals and drinks. So, what do they do? It is so easy, just a piece of cake! Will you try it again, please?

  • Hello Danny! First of all congratulations for being a star member! You do great job here and you deserve it!

    3. Oh, Danny, i saw your comment below by accident, the word is criticize. It is ok, never mind, e? :) I understand it now anyway :)

    4. Yes Danny, I understood that it is a restaurant or a bar :) I can't find other word for the wait on me. Hmm... awaited maybe? But it is almost same...

  • You are always welcome, dear!  Thank you!

  • OmG, how come I forget this "critique" word, hehehe... I am so sorry, sir xD
    Thanks for make it clear
  • Dear Peppo!  Why "to complain"?!  Does any teacher complain if his students don't know the lesson? Ha-ha! Look, "find fault" is so clear! Well,I can't taunt ladies! So, in the described situation I criticize you all!

  • what do I usually do if you give me almost right answers, but I think you can find better?
You usually advice and courage me to try again, hehe... In case I think 'complain' is the answer. Am I right, Sir?
  • Hi, dear Noas! Ooh! I see that I misled you! I am so sorry, dear! No5 WAS correct. "To wait on" means "to serve". I just made a mistake and typed 5 instead of 3. I meant no3. You said "point out to mistakes". You are almost right, but let me explain it again and try to find a single word to describe such an action. So, there are some people who are very hard to be pleased. Whatever others may do, they are not satisfied. They always think, this and that is wrong and they would do it somehow differently if everything is even  well-done. Look, as a teacher, I am one of such people, but only as a teacher. So, my prompting question is :what do I usually do if you give me almost right answers, but I think you can find better? (I don't mean explanations, OK?)

As to no4 you have found the right synonym. You are great! Thank you!

  • Hi Danny

Here I am again. Giving another shot to answer them.
