English Expression #5: Funnily Enough

What comes to your mind when you hear this phrase? I initially thought of it as something hilarious or comical, or when someone is joking. I keep hearing this term often in podcasts and it wouldn’t a waste of time sharing this on MyEC.

Mcmillan Dictionary defines it here. So, we should remember to use this phrase if we want to think about something is surprising and unusual.

If we’re talking about something positive, we can use it with enthusiasm when conversing with someone especially with friends.

Here's a couple of example:

  • Funnily enough, I bumped into Emma Watson while watching Beauty and the Beast in a movie house.
  • Funnily enough, when I was harvesting some veggies in my garden, I found an apple sprouting in the stem of my tomato plant.

We could also use some related adverbial phrases such as oddly enough, strangely enough or interestingly enough when we want to talk about unusual things or experiences.

How about you? Can you use ‘funnily enough’ in a sentence?

  • Hello, Risty!

I missed blogging terribly. Please bear with me for I was a bit preoccupied with so many things. I'd try to be updated here as much as possible. I appreciate the link you've shared about this phrase. For that, I gained another new info. I think this adverbial phrase could be used in a sarcastic way like when you're arguing or debating with someone.

With regards to your example sentences, I love the first one. Well, I couldn't picture you doing the punching because you're a well-mannered lady! Anyway, all of the sentences are correct except for this one...

Interestingly enough, the Bible never cease to amaze me every now and then. (subject-verb agreement)

Thank you very much for participating! :)

    Cheers!

  • Hey Kuya Robbie, so nice to see you back, I missed your educational blogs but here you are now, feeding my mind once again.

I would like to add some trivia I read from somewhere about this blog,http://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2010/07/is-funnily-enough-cringew...

Why I find this phrase sounds sarcastic? I don't know why.

Like, funnily enough, I saw my someone bullying another person so I decided to check them out and punch him in his face. ( I find it comical this way because I didn't expect to witness that scene but I'm so pissed that day so I involved myself to their one-sided brawl..;D)

Interestingly enough, the Bible never cease to amaze me every now and then.

Funnily enough, I tried to bake a cake but it turned out to be a pudding.

Oddly enough, every morning I heard some strange sounds inside my room as if I'm not alone.

Kuya, please correct me, I know I have so many mistakes here po. :)

    Thanks!
