I hope you’ll excuse me if my words hurt you. My main goal is not to insult anyone who chats or to condemn the act of chatting. However, I would like to share my personal experience in the chat room, which wasn’t pleasant at all.

The first thing that deeply hurts me to the core is to see my friends fight over a different opinion. Imagine, different members from different social class with different background are in the chat room. As such, they may have various opinions about religion, race, language, culture, etc.

It doesn’t matter that you think differently. In fact, it adds more color into this world. Different opinions make the chat room interesting. If everyone agrees over a matter, it won’t take place any discussions or chatting.

I witnessed once such a situation in the chat room. A member had a different idea over religion. Other members attacked him and insulted him. Even if someone is wrong and says nonsense, the right way of discussion is to talk politely and calmly. This made me think about the rules of chatting. Won’t I be bored if someone agrees with me all the time? Don’t I think that person isn’t authentic? Can he be true to himself? I don’t let him to share his true feelings because I would be hurt by his different opinion. Moreover, what kind of friend I am when I can't even tolerate my friend's different opinion? Therefore, what is the benefit of chatting? I chat to exchange ideas and to know other cultures. And, finally, do I really enjoy chatting under this restricted condition?

We all like freedom and we love to be free but we do not simply care about others’ freedom of expression in the chat room. We beat to death those who have different ideas to prove that we are totally right and our idea is superior. We also use abusive language to make our points.

This truly and deeply has hurt me that I swore to myself that I wouldn’t come to the chat room any more. So, I simply chat with whom I got to know them through blogging or taking part on MYEC English challenges. I found this a very safe and useful way to deal with chatting.

  • Interesting topic dear Nafis. I have never been much of a "chatter" at least in a public chatroom. Though many people there are nice and honest, there are always those taking advantages of the anonymous to be rude and disrespectful. As this kind of behavior makes me so nervous, i am, for my own good, staying away from those stressful places.
  • Dear Mustafa and dear Pushpi, thank you so much for reading the blog and for leaving comment.
  •  i  agree with you . All the menmers are humbly requested not to troll on this forum
  • Sweet Karenina, thank you so much for reading this. So kind of you!
  • Dear Vahid, thank you very much for your comment. Whenever I entered the chat room, there was a fight. I am not saying that all the time I saw a fight but just my luck, there was a fight in most times. However, sometimes even one fight is too much. A car accident may occur once but even one accident is too much.

Moreover, I can not support such a condition, chatting in a very angry and aggressive atmosphere. I am not also super positive to see bright things in a conflict since a conflict is like a muddy water. You can't see anything in a muddy water except mud.

Thank you very much for your comment. Good time!

  • Dear Jane, thank you so much for your lovely comment. I agree with you and I think we can control the trollies by not responding to them and ignoring them.
  • Hello Nafis!

Thanks for posting this blog. I had joined the conversation in the chat room thrice ever since I was a member of EC. My experiences in the chat room were mixed emotions. At first I was excited but as time goes by my excitement was replaced with annoyance. I thought that in this site members are not allowed to talk about sensitive matters especially sex. There are some members who send private messages thinking that they can help you improve your English but after a while they are already harassing you. I was really disappointed finding out all these things. I think as members of EC we must display kindness, decency and respect. We are here to learn English....not to annoy and make fun of other members.

  • Dear Robert, thanks a lot for your comment. I totally agree with you that some topics shouldn't be mentioned in the chat room. I also hope you have a great weekend..thanks a lot!
  • Dear Ali, thanks a lot for reading the blog. hahahahah..it made me laugh when you said "Silence is the best answer but I don't follow." I also think that some topics shouldn't be mentioned in the chat room since they are not good topics for a chit-chat.
  • Dear Tawfeeq, Thanks a lot for reading the blog and for your comment.
