Hi, friends!

Whenever I spoke to those who are interested in listening to music, I noticed that many of them would like to learn & play guitar but they don't know where or how to start, and they really want to be able to play a certain instrument. Commonly they think of playing guitar, because it's popular & it seems to be easy to start with.

So I want to dedicate this blog to those who are eager to learn the music & to play at least guitar or piano (even only with chords), as this is possible for anyone who is interested in learning & playing any instrument. However, the most important thing you'd better remember is that you should learn the principle first before you do anything else, that is, which is the music notes, as you need to be basically able to read the music notes from the start. Normally many learners have failed themselves a couple of months later, not because of the lack of their practices, not because they don't have enthusiasms but they didn't start from the scratch, as they started with the chords first rather than with the music notes (so they couldn't go further). What they should have done is that they should learn how to read music first and then they should comply it with the instrument with the correct finger positions & the correct tunes. Once you are able to read the basic music notes at least on or with the keyboard, then you can tune the guitar strings by yourself as well as you choose any simple music & can try it by yourself without teacher's help, otherwise you will struggle or unable to play any other instruments (whichever you would like to learn & play) with the right & correct tunes.

For your reference, they call the music notes as C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C (which is equivalent to Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do).

As you see the above guitar string notes with red circles which are the basic notes (CDEFGABC) from the low to the high, you could compare them with the keyboard notes. This is purely an example.

If you have any question or enquiry or help, please feel free to contact me.

This is only a basic understanding of music in principle but once you would understand this, then you can go on the next step, as there are many other things to learn... just like learning English, haha!!!

Your friend,

James

  • Hi, Marina!

Thanks for stepping in & leaving your comments!

Actually I learned 'Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do' only at school but I learned CDEFGABC when I taught myself playing guitar, then applied these codes to playing piano with melody & codes.

  • Hi, Gonca!

Honestly speaking, I don't mind the pop music, but I really dislike the rock music, as they make too noisy with no harmonised sound but they only sound like shouting....

Personally I like Classical music very much, and I also like country music, especially Gospel Song (1970 or 1980's), as this was how I started with music, and how I was motivated in liking music.

    Anyway, thanks for your comments....!!!

  • Hi, Surawan!

Yeah, I prefer playing Piano to guitar or clarinet, as playing piano is great in listening to the sound of harmony, even if I play guitar better than piano, because I've never learned the music or any instruments professionally, and certainly not by music teacher, because I learned them by myself.

However, how I learned or how I was able to learn myself is that I think it's because I could read the music and it helped me to be able to play other instruments, although it wasn't easy for the self-study. And on the top of this, I really enjoy in playing piano, guitar & clarinet (or harmonica).

Actually I helped my daughter for her violin practices when she was a little girl, especially for tuning the violin. So I learned myself to play violin with the very basic skill, not a beautiful sound in play but at least with music notes, unfortunately without vibrato. Violin is the most difficult instrument to play...

For you, I think, you may learn Viola rather than Violin because you have long arms as per said. Normally someone who doesn't have delicate hand and who has long hands or arms, they play Viola instead, although they started with Violin at the beginning.

  • Hi, Gonca!

Thanks for your very useful comments & nice compliments!

As you seem to have played guitar for a long time, you may be on a high level and I am wondering what sort of music you are playing & like the most... classics, country music, pop music or something else?

  • Hi, Grace!
Once you've learned something & liked the music, then I think you can do it again & this time if you learn it from scratch in principle, I am sure you will enjoy & be pleased yourself when you reach a certain level and gain some achievement.
I hope I would hear something more positive from you in the near future. Thanks for your positive comments, anyway!
  • Many thanks for sharing us the practical information. I liked to play piano and mouth-organ when I was teenage. Only I played was simple songs that I was able to sing, but I couldn't play more difficult music because I didn't learn the music notes and principle formally. It was a little pity that I couldn't keep practicing them since then. But now, you've given me a hope to learn again. Thanks again, James.
  • Doctor! I am glad you like John Denver's songs....'Take me home, Country Road', yeah, I remember now as I used to play & sing this song & his other songs a lot at the campus.

I think you'd better make your own band, and sing by your own accompanying musical instrument which would be possible, as the first choice would be a guitar. Anyway, I am sure that you can start to learn guitar again & enjoy playing & singing for yourself.

  • Thanks James! Actually, I tried to play guitar when I was at university - I thought it was cool - but failed and gave it up eventually. I can sing by the Karaoke, but I can't catch up with the band, and what's worse is I often forget the lyrics. So I'd make a bad singer.

BTW, I like country music, too. I like 'Country Road'.

  • Hi, Anele!

So you play this instrument (Banduria), yeah I've seen it before & I never played it, but I used to play 12 strings guitar which gives the better sound. I used to lead the sing-along time for several years & then I used to conduct for the small choir. During these periods, I learned playing classical guitar by a friend of mine who hasn't got a left-hand thumb. He is a brilliant classical guitarist, but he is not a professional classical guitarist either as it's only for his hobby. He taught me some basics then I adopted his teaching, so practised & learned it myself too. Him & I, we used to sing together & performed together with his own composed songs & I arranged musics enabling to be accompanied by other instruments (Piano, flute, violin & cello).

For the last 5 years, I haven't written any music except 'Welcome to MyEC' which I did for one special MyEC member (20000th) last year, as this is on my profile.

    Thanks for your comment, anyway!

  • Hi, Doctor!

I heard your singing voice and you have really a nice voice. I really like yours. I think you should learn it & start with playing guitar just like a country singer with guitar.

Well, I couldn't sing & I couldn't play any instrument but one thing I knew at the early stage was that I was able to read music (just basic), however, I joined in choir just before the age of 20th but I couldn't be fitted in Tenor & Bass parts at all because I couldn't follow the different tunes, it took almost a year in catching up the right tune, then I learned guitar by myself because I read music but when you reached a certain level I was bored, so I started playing piano. I knew nothing about the finger positions, so I played my way with chords first which I learned from guitar then I put the melody within the chords, this was how I learned playing piano. As I am not professionally trained, you can't go further. As for my interest & curiosity, I learned Clarinet as well, which was fantastic, as you don't need to read the several notes in one time not like piano notes.

Hence you can do it because you have a great potentiality in music which you don't seem to know yourself. What I heard your singing voice, it was excellent and I am sure many people may agree with me. Give a try! Hahaha! Thanks for stepping in, anyway!
