The old farmer had been worked at his small farm together with his son for years. The two had several fields and a strong horse that pulled the plow. One day the horse disappeared. "What a misfortune," whined the neighbors. But the farmer replied, "Luck or misfortune - who knows who knows?" One week later the horse came back and brought five wild horses with him. Again the neighbors came to the courtyard, this time to congratulate. But the farmer said, "Fortune or misfortune who knows who knows?" The next day the son wanted to tame the first of the wild horses. But he was dropped and broke a leg. "Such a misfortune," the neighbors complained again. "Happiness or misery - who knows who knows?" Replied the old farmer again. Three days later officers came to the village. They took all the young men for the war. But they could not pick up the farmer's son because of his broken leg.. So he remained the only young man in the village and at the end of the war he was the only surviving young men of the village.

This a German parable translated by myself. I don't know who the writer of this parable is.

  • Thanks, dear Risty. I will try finding some other parables, too. It needs just a little effort to translate. I like parables because most of them have a deep meaning.

Thanks for your nice comment. I am happy you liked reading.

  • Miss Rose, you will see this as simple as it is, but no, it spells fate. Sometimes, there are people who are very lucky. So nice to read some German parable, hope you'll write more. I like it!

  • I don't know so exactly whether you kidding me ... hahaha, Fr@nk ... but I wouldn't wish for him to become Trump.  To become Trump would be the worst case.

  • Exactly, Dara Gino !!!

  • Guta arbeit, Rose. We have a saying, (incidents of a nation are benefits to another nation). You never know, whatever happens to you, you must be thankful to your God. His leg was broken, but that incident saved his life. Thanks, Rose for a very meaningful poem!
