Back To The Past!

Back To The Past!

Heritage plays an important role in the value of any country.  The country that has set of unique traits on the human. Human are the one who strive to create those traits that give them recognition from others.  It is very important to keep the cultural achievements for young new generation.

There is an Arabian proverb which emphasizes that who doesn't have something from the past, won't have anything from the present.  One of the traditional things we have learned from our grandparents are Traditional Foods.  That foods that always have special and different taste.  The taste that reminds us of the story of the beloved one who are gone from a long time.  Today, I will show you one of the most Omani traditional foods.  This food has high calories.  It contains of any type of meat, but sheep meat is better, wheat, salt and a little bit of spices of clove ground, black pepper ground and cinnamon ground.  This food can be eaten as a breakfast, lunch or dinner.  It depends on the person, but this dish usually prepare and serve for special occasions like wedding, Eid and Ramadan. It is known as " Harees ".

Literally, Harees is an Arabian word which mean that something have been mashed perfectly.  As it is mashed, of course it is very soft and easy to eat.  This mushy filling dish, can make your stomach full from a few spoons only.  Moreover, this pureed food is easily digestible, especially for babies who start eating and for elderly people who have no teeth.

So, you can see how it looks from the picture.  My mom and I made it today. You will notice it is covered by a yellow liquid which is known as "Samen" that made from the butter or naturally taken from the cow.  It really adds more flavor to it, but personally I do not like to add it because it will look a little bit fatty.

Now, If you are planning to visit Oman, do not hesitate to call me.  I will make sure to make you totally rich from this dish :P

we don't eat it with a bread. It's ready to be eaten as shown in the picture, you just need to bring your spoon hah..

Ohh I love pastry, I often buy the one that is already prepared, but it would be really great if you can show us your secrets to make it :D .. I wouldn't mind to try your recipe

  • @Mr Bob, You can't imagine how happy I am while reading your enormous compliment.  Nice people are everywhere and you are one of them with no doubt. I proudly take my hat off to all people with a little grey hair because their huge achivements in their life and the life of others in many aspects. The two important things that always come together with those people are great experience and wisdom, and they are the key to make things done in a very good way.  I'm really glad and very pleased to know that you want to continue your teaching world as long as the opprtunity allow you.  It is really a perfect decison because age can't be an obstacle to giving. As you said there are some restrictions that might prevent you like the age limit in some areas, but there are always an exception. There is always a hope to achive something. For example, I've heard of someone hired in Oman from the ministry of education and he was 63. Anyway, I'm sure you can enjoy and have fun everywhere. Wish you all the best forever and You are truely welcome to come to Oman anytime even if it was for a short visit.. XO

  • Oh my! I should have read your blog after having lunch!

I'll copy this one to my recipes list. I guess this meal is eaten with some bread isn't it?

Thanks for share and if you ever need any pastry recipe just ask me, I'm the right person haha...
  • Actually, I think that Oman is a place where a little grey hair is a problem for a teacher or at least there are age requirements if you are coming into the country.  Much of the ME is that way because people used to start dying by age 60 because medical care wasn't so good in those days.

We know some very good people have been forced to retire (in another country) because they became 60 and there was some rule left from the old days. Saudi ARAMCO took all their rules from American companies over 60 years ago and still follow the old rules. Even their top managers and engineers who know how everything needs to work are not an exception, they must retire by age 60.

If I ever came to Oman I would have to be invited by a private school that would not force me out at some point. If I lived there I would probably want to stay until I died. It is a nice country with very nice people. It just shows that you don't have to have billions of petro-dollars to make a country nice for everyone and develop good medical and educational systems. Your Sultan has done a wonderful job for the people of your country. I wish I had gotten to meet him and tell him so.

  • @Mr Bob, oh I'm glad that you like the life in Oman. It's an honor for us to have you and your wife teaching there, I really hope that you could find a good offer to come soon.. who knows I might be your student in real one day :D !!
