I don' disagree with fun besides learning but every thing's got its own limitation…this saying is just encouraging all English-level members to limit themselves for using their new advanced words only to have fun! For sure it's happened to lots of advanced students who wanted to chat and make friends in here but they were asked to talk down; and so not to lose the pleasure and chance of talking in main or private, they gave it up and after all by reading these kinda words they will be led towards this tension. As chatting is addictive, then the more they chat, the more they descend in knowledge.
Giving an example, I can say, this situation is exactly the same with a student who reads one banal book for thousand times a day and at the end of each time he says "Alright! I improved my vocabulary knowledge…that's enough for today!!!!!!" then the same story begins for tomorrow. But we shouldn't be like him! Using the banal easy words more and more in chat room just for fun and chatting, we'll be jerking ourselves around. When I was addicted in here, I just can remember this point; once I wasn't in the mood of checking the dictionary, asked one of the advanced members to talk down to me but he ignored it; he did the best! This is the reaction we should take towards this.
The ones who really* can improve their English by chat rooms, are the ones always having dictionary by themselves. Doesn't it fairly refer to our laziness that we give it up to check the dictionary while chatting and encourage others to talk in a better way so at least to be sure we can learn sth?!. We shouldn't always face the elementary words used in main without following a particular topic (unfortunately the problem which is still continuing, and yet no solution). There are lots of E-books and searching dictionaries on the net so it won't be such a great shake. I've seen members who nag "I've been coming to chat room for a long time but I don' know why I can not improve my English!!!!!!!" Then what could be the answer?!
If we're gonna have fun through talking only, then there are lots of other sites following this matter…The chat room of EC is following both the fun and learning in a fifty-fifty range.
