Am I Psycho? I hope not yet :-D

Today I am coming up with my confession. It might be for you something shocking, something you have never had to face in your entire life or some of you might think I am a psycho or mad. Anyway, let me share what is on my mind and what has scared me to death several times. I am going to talk about... Sleeping Paralysis.

Is this expression new to you? Let me explain firstly what it stands for because not all people are familiar with it. I don't want to copy some lines from Wikipedia, so I will better use my broken English. Sleeping Paralysis is something what happens to people when they want to fall asleep. It is like brain is still somewhere stuck and doesn't sleep, meanwhile body is totally dead and sleeping. In this stadium we usually experience those situations like we fall from stairs, tree etc. It all would be fine because we wake up from this and we are maybe scared, however after some time we feel fine. BUT there is one big BUT because those who suffer from Sleeping Paralysis wake up and... they can't move at all. According to our smart scientists every 10th person experience something like this once in their life and every 1000th person suffer from it time to time or frequently. Unfortunately I was blessed to be that one 1000th person and do believe me that there is nothing to brag about or to envy.

I have suffered from it since I was 18 and I don't know why but it I have experienced many forms of it. It started like I was falling down into the black hole and I just knew that when I reached the bottom, I was going to die. Pretty scary and when I woke up, I couldn't have moved with my hands. It took me time to realize it all, it caused me many sleepless nights because when you get into this stadium, it is not a big deal to recognize it, you have some halucination, you can hear weird sunds and these all are signs that something very bad is coming. Besides you are even able to go trough it many times per night and it is the worst about it. To wake up scared, can't move properly and then trying to fall asleep with knowing that it is coming back again.

Basically, I didn't pay so much attention to it because it happened to me I guess twice a year. Later I came to know that it usually happened to me when I was very very tired and exhausted. I tried to prevent myself from it but since I have kids now it is more complicated because as you know almost every mom lacks sleep. So do believe me that once I was even watching myself and my husband while being out of my body, was yelling at my husband to look at me and no voice was comming out of my throat. Again too much scary, something what woke me up, forced my soul to come back to my body and for the first time I found out how terrible it was. I couldn't have moved my single finger, hand, leg, nothing. I thought I suffered from stroke and that I would die soon. Just imagine you are on your bed with open eyes and can't say anything, can't move. Exactly as I have described above - body is sleeping but mind is active. It took me like one minute and I was again able to move. I had to get used to for it, I learned to calm myself down after each and every "nightmare" like this and to realize it is just that one disgusting part after waking up from it.

I know that people say: "Don't google this or that, just see a doctor." However, as for this I am happy I found out on the Internet what is wrong with me, I searched for more information about it, found out there are many people with the same problem and it all just gave me better feeling. Feeling that I have to get on with it and shouldn't be so scared of it, else it would maybe control my mind and make a psycho of me...

  • Mr. Bob, yeah it is exactly how it feels. Impossible to move and can't do anything. Thanx for your wish about no more dreams like this, I think it is more about being tired... so yeah I must be fresh :-)

Leo, it isn't about being hungry at all :-D it is about your tired mind and disobedient brain which allowed to sleep your body but didn't allow your brain to sleep... look it up and read sth about it, if you want to :-)

  • When that has happened to me, it was just part of the dream. I couldn't move and thought I was awake and paralyzed, but realized it was a dream and made myself wake up.

I was actually paralyzed once and that is very scary. I had a bicycle crash where the front wheel dropped into a hole going down a very steep hill... the front wheel stopped and the rest of the bike flipped over and I landed right on my neck and the back of my head. I could look at the sky and see the birds flying and the wind moving the grass around me, but I really couldn't move or feel any part of my body.

After a moment my neck muscles popped the neck back in place and I was able to move again. Maybe it is similar to what happens when people are hanged so the brain is aware but can't control anything else.

I hope you never have another dream like that and if you do I hope you will wake yourself up quickly.

  • Nawa, I believe that there is something about meditation and that it might help because it simply make us free from stress.. thanx for great tip

barbie, yeah it is "only" one of the Sleeping Disorders not sth what would terribly change my life, anyway such experience is really sth very scary..

Ramnord, than you for your corrections, I do appreciate it! You are right, starting factor is in my opinion especially lack of sleep and tireness. I hope you won't experience it again, thanx for nice comment.

Batu, do you think I have like five bedrooms in my apartment? :-D Anyway, sometimes I sleep with son and it doesn't have effect on it :-/

Jai, yeah I finally realized it, so here I am with my confession :-D

Sevil, ohhh dear Sevil, it is the same I guess. I just would like to see sombody around me to tell me what I do or if I am as you have mentioned as dead body with open eyes, which is damn scaryy.. oh myyy :-D M glad you are the same psycho then :-D thanx for your comment.

Joe, LOOOL watta supportive comment :-D guess in this state of mind you can hardly commit suicide since you can only move with your eye lids :-D

  • Estanis, hope she won't experience it again and since she is kicking from sleep, it is a good sign :-D

Anele, dear thank you for your piece of advice, I do appreciate it but I usually eat at seven and go to bed at eleven so my stomach isn't full at all. I can't do any physical aktivity like dancing etc before sleeping, once I worked out and couldn't sleep then becuase my blood was still boiling inside :-D so let us see, maybe m just tensed and need more sleep...

bahtu, thanx for comment and yeah I try to sleep not on back. M glad you are one of us and you know what m talking about :-D ok jokes apart and you know m atheist, so I don't believe in some verse that might make me calm, so plz try to understand it. You know, I read about it and it is related to some chemical reaction in your brain which causes it.

Yousra, darling, I won't laugh at you at all and I also read that people from different cultures call it by different names, so m not so surprised. Well, one more thing. It is proved that this happen when some chemical reaction in your brain starts, they have proof, they tested it. So how can I say m on wrong way since it is just something bad in my silly brain? ;)

Adriano, yeah guess m stressed, you know Christmas is coming :-D thanx for comment

Regada, congrats for being one of us too :-) well, you can also look it up on youtube there are some videos about it... for a long time I have no idea what the hell it is, I even thought it was some form of sleeping epylepsy but luckily it is 'just' sleeping disorder.

Sandra, I agree it happens when we are very tired but I can't say all know it. My parents, parents in law, husband - none of them have ever experienced it, so do believe me that even my dad asked me once to see a psychologist with this... thanx for your comment :-)

Jess, ohhh so you are also one of us in da club. And yeahhhh, yesterday I watched some videos and there was exactly what you have mentioned - try to move your big toe - this advice might be maybe really good one and I will try it one day. Hope not tonight omg :-D because i have just slept for five hours thanx to our psycho neighbour. Thank you for telling us about it!!!

  • I like this blog,! I could relate in to it.

This happens to me also about 3 or more times.  A person told me the technique to get awake quickly is just to move frequently your big Toe, I didn't believe of what this man said, but when I did encounter this grim nightmare and couldn't move again even I'm conscious, hard to breath and something that your going to die of suffocation  , then I instantly realized what this man advice, I continue moved my Big toe for about a seconds then I get awake, That the time that I realized that the advice I heard on him was true.this is only based on my personal experience.

  • This happens to me too. As you rightly pointed, stress is the root cause for this problem. When I return home from a travel tour, I usually suffer from this syndrome. Even I wanted to know more about this; so thanks for sharing this piece of useful information. By the way, you're not a psycho but the title was so catchy that it egged me to read it immediately.

  • No, Luci. You're not Psycho...

You've been just experiencing a kind of disturbance or something similar due to some stress...

    (In my opinion)
  • My dear Luci,

Try to go to bed without eating a heavy meal.  A glass of warm milk or a sandwich, or just a cup of porridge or fruits will do for a dinner. When we sleep, the rest of our bodies should be at rest, too.  Don't give your "workers" in the digestive system a heavy work when it is time to go to sleep.

Next, if you want to take a short nap, see to it that you have at least one hour gap between your nap and the last meal you had.  Never take a nap with a "full" stomach.

Next, try to do some dancing moves at least 30 minutes to one hour every day during your free time.  Best time is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when your stomach is empty.  Here, I don't mean a sweet dance.  It should be a rigorous dance where you will sweat to death, lol.  (Just enough to make you sweat, dear.)

Next, you should never sleep alone in bed.  A twitchy person can save you during your nightmare.

Last, a prayer is always effective.

    *****

Have a good night sleep, Luci!

  • I remembered the first time I heard about it when my girlfriend (actual wife) told me her story. I was shocked when I realiced she wasn't kidding me, so I tried to reply with some medical reason Like anxiety disorder or something like that.

She hasn't experienced it again like before but I still suffer from her kicks when she's asleep :(
  • noas, now you know what it is so you are ready if it would happen to you and m sure you would remember my blog :-D well, I got used to it and it isn't such a tragedy, there are worse things, dear. Thanx for encouriging words ;-)

Pixary, wooow you are pretty attentive girl, yeah it was it :-) so be happy that you sleep like a dead body and your brain cooperate with your body :-D

Expector, thanx for your comment. You know I have read many things about it and since I know what it is, I would feel like idiot to go to a doctor with something like this. It might be stress and if it is stress, I would never take any antidepressive pills sooo I hope by the time things will be fine with me ;-)

Student, yupeeeeeeeeee finally someone who knows what I described here :-) On one hand sad you experienced it too, on the other hand pretty good that you mentioned I described it exactly as it is. I have read that in different cultures people give it different names and somewhere in africa they call it even some dissease related to witches :-D thanx for your comment.

One important thing!!! Guys, I didn't write it, so that you would pity me, it is not my style. I am just curious, if there are people who have the same experience ;-)
