The road marathon race was held on Friday the 20th January, 2012 as the first event of the Zahira Primary School (Puttalam) annual inter house athlete competition.
40 numbers of marathoners, those who are studying in grade 5 (between 10 – 11 ages), as 10 from each house, ‘Safa’ (Blue), ‘Marwa’ (Green), ‘Hira’ (Red) and ‘Noor’ (Yellow) were participated in this 3 kilometer distance race. It was started after waving the national flag at 4:30 p.m. by Mr. M.S.M. Hilmi, the Principal.
Mr. S.I.L. Muzammil, Deputy Principal said “Parents, Old students, well wishers and the Student’s Cadet of Zahira National College (secondary section of Zahira – administrates separate) were rendered their fullest support while many non profitable organizations, such as Puttalam branch of Sri Lanka Jamath-e-Islam helped us, to make this event in great success”. He paid the thanks on behalf of the school to who were mentioned and missed to be mentioned. Route of the marathon was crossing main roads and by roads which are under construction. Most of the marathoners were participated without proper or any (marathon) shoes worn. Though some students are wearing thick socks/ stockinet to safe their feet. But, cheering of the public encouraged the marathoners while some were arranged water, energy drinks and ice-lolly to refresh them.
The winners of the road marathon competition are: K.R. Asjath Ahamed 20 (winner), F. Rayshan Ahamed 13 (first runner-up) of ‘Hira’ and M.T. Thamseer 80 (second runner-up) of ‘Safa’ house respectively.
Houses of Zahira Primary School, ‘Safa’, ‘Marwa’, ‘Hira’ and ‘Noor’ were named after places which are connected with the life of Prophets of Islam, Ibrahim (PBUH) and Muhammed (PBUH).
Awards will be delivered on the annual inter house competition which planned to be held in the first week of February.
