Surface Condenser - Shellside

Inside of surface condenser. Notice the water droplets at the top. Below are brass tubes which carry cold water through the shell. At the top is large opening which is a pipe maybe 4 feet in diameter. Steam comes in through the large opening and is cooled and condensed to water droplets. When it condenses the volume is greatly reduced making a vacuum inside. Piping that is connected to it connects the vacuum (negative pressure) to other process equipment where a lack of pressure is needed. This also is a source of pure water condensed form the steam so it can be used where pure water is needed for processes.

  • I love condensers of every kind.  Vacuum condensers are especially nice given that they operate under a negative pressure.  They also have a long life before failure if they are design well and properly maintained.
