We have the same here. We call it: Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Last night, I saw on television about a mayor of an eastern side town mandated his constituents to recycle. The municipal people collect those, and one of the products from recycling was a hollow block used for construction. The hollow block is made from shredded plastic and foil packs, and mixed with cement and sand. Also, made into pavement blocks. Beautiful and functional products from the garbage.
I certainly agree about the plastic water bottles. We see them all in the water where people have thrown them down and then the wind or rain takes them into the waterways. If not making litter we end up with them being buried in the landfill.
Our city was talking about doing away with recycling so I started this group to let them see many people would fight against that move. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=428903300017 Now we are getting much larger bins for recyclable materials. they will pick up the equivalent of two large oil barrels (90 gallons) from each house for sorting and recycling. Everything else is in a separate container to be buried at the land fill. It looks like we won!
This photo must be showed in everywhere... I understand the plastic is very useful, but sometimes there are an excessive use and misuse of plastic.
A good example is the bottle of water... bottled water is very expensive (1000% more expensive than tap water), no healthier than tap water and means GARBAGE; in fact it represents a great risk to the planet.

We burn these kinds of plastic in Japan. We only recycle the PET plastic which is symbol #1.
