Bromo is still active. It has erupted dozens of times, the last was on 2010.
Bromo is the most beautiful view of sunrise in Indonesia (many people said that). I have been there, when I was child, but unfortunately didn't get to the top of Bromo.
To be able to see that exotic view, you must climb to the creater of Bromo. But, if you aren't used to walking, there are provided many jeeps for rent (about 300.000 IDR / 30 USD).
Don't worry about the jeep driver. They are very experienced and highly skilled, so you will be safe. .... (^_^)
About 4.45 or 5 a.m, the sun will rise slowly, you will be amazed at the beauty of the sunrise. Don't be surprised, a lot of visitors applaud when the sun comes up slowly because of its beauty has its own sensation.
You can travel ala backpacker or suitcase. (is up to you).
