An Invitation to Teacher James

I met a wonderful teacher in Brighton named James. It was funny because his parents lived in Brighton and he was staying with them. Late in the evenings he would laugh and say he had to go home to mom and dad. I loved hearing about Brighton from a "local". He told me a fabulous story about this palace. I'd love to retell it, but I think it would be more accurate if James shared the story.James attended my talk about MyEC and said he would love to join our community and volunteer in some of the groups. Okay James! Here is your official invite. Please join MyEc so that you can leave a comment describing the fun history behind this photo.

  • Sorry Tara! You never know, if you're lucky, I might be able to be your tour guide, as I lived in London for 11 years!
  • Ouch. You reminded me how close I was to London. I still can't believe I didn't have time to see the big city. At least I have something to look forward to.
  • Hi Larisa,

Thanks for the welcome, and I'm glad you're enjoying learning about my hometown. Brighton is a very popular holiday destination for British people. In fact, tourism is the number one industry in the town. It is very close to London (just 50 minutes by train), so it is easy to get to. It also has really great weather and beaches, so it's a great place to visit. I hope you can go someday!

  • Hello James,

Welcome to MyEC! I like the way you share your story motivating people to ask different questions. It's like a game. :)

    How big is Brighton?

Is Brighton a popular holiday place among British people?

  • Yes Tara, I went to Ceri's great talk, and I agree, I think she'd enjoy this conversation!
  • I don't think I met any participants from Indonesia. I'll let you know if I hear of any. Next year you should try to win a sponsorship to the conference!
  • Hello Tara,

I wonder, is there any participants in the conference from Indonesia?

  • It's so funny that the Queen didn't like the design! It's so beautiful. Yes, at least I have an excuse to go back to Brighton.

James, were you at Ceri Jones' session about using images in the classroom? I think she would be proud of all the discussion around this single photo.

  • Thanks Nadiyah, you've made my day. Unfortunately the Palace doesn't belong to me, if I want to visit I have to pay like everyone else! I'll settle for the MyEc palace. :-)
  • It's such a pity you didn't go inside Tara, the decoration is so beautiful and unique. You'll just have to go back!

A few years after the king died(1837), Queen Victoria visited the Palace. She hated it because she thought it was vulgar and badly designed. She decided that she wanted to have a different summer palace, so she bought another house in a different part of the country. In 1850, she took the furniture she liked and sold the palace to the city. If you ask me, she had bad taste!
