Deepak Chopra Talks About The Role Of Ego

In this video, Deepak Chopra, an Indian-American medical doctor and writer, talks about " the Ego" and how we can deal with it.He defines the ego as self-image or personal image or limited identity or seperate self. Then, he describes "healthy ego" which does not dominate self. Healthy ego is joyful, effortless and independent.Beyond the ego, there is "Real Self" and beyond the real self is "Atman." Real self is spontaneously, joyful, loving and compassionate.Should we kill the ego? "Do not try to kill the ego.", he says. "just observe it, if you are angry or fearful, just feel the body and sensation. Do not judge it. Do not comprehend it."He states that the more you are uncomfortable, the more ego you have. But, how can we grow a healthy ego? It is better to understand the motivations. For example, ask yourself why I do something. Then, answer it honestly, I do it because I want to get attention or popularity or sharing ideas and etc. So, by asking and answering honestly, we can boost our ego. The more ego goes from internal-self to real self, the more we get closer to enlightment.

  • Well, I concluded that ego is something that we are born with. Is it right? But, I understood from Salim talk that others give us reflections and thoes reflections build our ego. So, the question is : Do we all have ego? or Do we build it after birth and during childhood, adulthood and etc?
  • Sigmund Freud says: "Unconscious mind operates by proposing that it has a particular structure". He proposed that the self was divided into three parts: the Ego, the Superego and the Id.

The Id (Latin, "it" in English, "Es" in the original German) represented primary process thinking -- our most primitive need gratification type thoughts. The Id, Freud stated, constitutes part of one's unconscious mind. It acts on primitive instinctual urges ( hunger, anger, etc.).

    The Superego

The Superego ("Über-ich" in the original German) represented our conscience and counteracted the Id with moral .The Superego, Freud stated, is the moral agent that links both our conscious and unconscious minds. The Superego stands in opposition to the desires of the Id. The Superego is itself part of the unconscious mind; it is the internalization of the world view and norms and mores a child absorbs from parents and peers. As the conscience, it is a primitive or child based knowledge of right and wrong, it maintains the taboos specific to a child's internalization of parental culture.

    The Ego

In Freud's view the Ego stands in between the Id and the Superego to balance our primitive needs and our moral beliefs and taboos. ("Ego" means "I" in Latin; the original German word Freud coined was "Ich".) Relying on experience, a healthy Ego provides the ability to adapt to reality and interact with the outside world in a way that accommodates both Id and Superego.
I used the studies from "Sigmund Freud" and I hope they will be helpful for us.
