Linking

One of the most important aspects of pronunciation is "linking". In English our words link together when we speak. Native English speakers do not say each word separately. Some words slide forward into others. Check out this lesson on linking.

Here are some sentences to practise:

Can_I have an_orange?

Thanks_a_lot for_all you do_around here.

Has_anyone seen_a dog with_a black tail_and_a blue collar?

I_am_already going.

When_are you_arriving?

Can you challenge group members to some other sentences?

  • Hi Tara,

They seem to be easy but not, thank you for this challenge.

    • Nice linking!
    • Great!

Try "with_a black tail_and_a_blue collar" again

  • Nice linking, Anis! You just need to work on where to put the stress in the sentence. This is a bit tough when the sentence is not in context.

When_are you_arriving? (see previous comment to Nida)
  • Excellent! Your linking is perfect.

Check the sentence stress in "I am already going". It depends on the meaning where you put the stress. In most cases the stress would go on the already, but it could also be on the going.

The more you listen to English, the better you will get at linking.
