Is it not "The gift hasn't been given to Pete by you" ? I was marked down for writing my answer as such instead of "The gift to Pete hasn't been given by you". How is it any different?

Dear Afro! It is very easy to answer your question. RELIEVE is a verb, while RELIEF is a noun. Here is an example:
The taken pill relieved my headache.
I felt great relief after taking a pill.

They found a large area where there were no trees.
Your main clause is in the past tense, so the subordinate clause must be in the past tense, too. TREES is a plural, so your predicate must be WERE.
