Hello all.

It's been a while since I posted any discussion in here. Today I want to ask anyone the real meaning of this song, Underneath Your Clothes by Shakira. At first I was reluctant to post this question, but then, it really make me crazy, because I think all this while I had wrongly interpret the meaning of this song.

Ok! Let me first put the lyric of the song in here, then I will explain my 'crazy interpretation' of the song. :)

"Underneath Your Clothes"

You're a song
Written by the hands of God
Don't get me wrong cause
This might sound to you a bit odd
But you own the place
Where all my thoughts go hiding
And right under your clothes
Is where I find them

Underneath Your Clothes
There's an endless story
There's the man I chose
There's my territory
And all the things I deserve
For being such a good girl honey

Because of you
I forgot the smart ways to lie
Because of you
I'm running out of reasons to cry
When the friends are gone
When the party's over
We will still belong to each other

Underneath Your Clothes
There's an endless story
There's the man I chose
There's my territory
And all the things I deserve
For being such a good girl honey [x2]

I love you more than all that's on the planet
Movin' talkin' walkin' breathing
You know it's true
Oh baby it's so funny
You almost don't believe it
As every voice is hanging from the silence
Lamps are hanging from the ceiling
Like a lady tied to her manners
I'm tied up to this feeling

Underneath Your Clothes
There's an endless story
There's the man I chose
There's my territory
And all the things I deserve
For being such a good girl honey [x2]

Ok.. back to the lyrics. I've highlighted the lyrics that made me confuse (Italic bold). This lyrics made me think that she was talking about 'breast'. OHMY! Don't be angry with me.
Why do I think that way? Honestly, my mind is not in the gutter or anything, but it stated 'underneath your clothes, there's an endless story' and then 'there's my territory'. You know sometimes, some people will have endless fascination with 'boobs'.
So please, please please enlighten me, what's the real meaning of this song. And please be kind with me :)
Thanks.

Yes Danny, the things are exactly how you say them. Thanks for your precious advice. :) And now the idiom "be taken aback" seems to be understood enough :)

Sometimes we are innocent :) I am too, some things i don't understand them, and my parents tell me not to be so innocent because many people are sly and they can fool me, so i have to be careful. :)

Dear Elen, my friend! Your parents are 100% right. Life is not a piece of cake and people may be not only sly but also envious, unfair, violent, vicious, mean and much worse. So, every adult person who feels differently must be strong enough to confront what he/she doesn't percept. At least, you should be aware of what you can face any moment of your life for not to be taken aback. Our lives are  everlasting struggle with our surrounding and ourselves. Sorry to say that, but I have already lived through the best part of my life and I do know what I mean.

Please anyone can explain the meaning to me - Underneath Your Clothes by Shakira

  • :D :D Elen, wow .. why am I the only one that don't understand the meaning of the song?

    • Sometimes we are innocent :) I am too, some things i don't understand them, and my parents tell me not to be so innocent because many people are sly and they can fool me, so i have to be careful. :)

  • Hey dear Noaslpls, i was listening to this song when i was teenager and i remember that i liked it very much. I agree with Jeffrey and Danny. I think it is obvious, or at least obvious to me, that she is speaking about the body of the man that she loves, she have made love with him and she is happy when she is with him. Am i sounding very romantic? :D :)

  • Hi Danny,

First of all, I don't mind you leaving your comment in here. I really appreciate it.

Second, thank you for your explanation. I think now I can understand the song better. Your explanation together with Jeffrey's answer really make me look at the song in totally different perspective.

It's really interesting to note that, even though I understand each words, but when each sentence stringed together like that, I totally lost the whole meaning.

Finally, thank you for the lovely flower. :)

    • Dear friend! Althought I speak some Spanish and can even translate, their ideas are not always clear for me. I understand what they mean but disagree from time to time. It is so called 'cultural barrier". To overcome it, we should get some experience living in that country or communicating with its people. I also speak rather good French. I lived and worked in Paris for rather long and it is much easier for me to accept French literature than Spanish. In fact, I accept French as my native language and  culture, but I sometimes say "No,I don't think so"!

    • Hi Danny

I understand what you meant. Sometimes it's hard to understand the nuance of certain language, because of cultural differences.

    • Yeah, dear! You've got it!

      These flowers are for you!

  • Anna,

I never thought it that way. I think in a way, you're right. :) Our clothes may not reveal about our inner feelings.

Maybe you can read the explanation from Jeffrey Raven and Danny Clark to understand the whole concept/meaning of the song/lyric.
