Unfavorable Numbers

4 and 9 are unfavorable numbers in Japan because 4 suggests death and 9 suggests illness. The reason why these numbers suggest these things is because 4 is read し, which can mean death, as in 死(し), and 9 is read く, which can mean illness, as in 苦(く). There are some Japanese hotels which don't use 4 and 9 for their room numbers.

In addition, the number 7 is favorable. There are words like "lucky seven". What numbers are unfavorable in your country? And what numbers are favorable?

  • In my opinion all numbers are good. I don't know why people here somehow think that number 7 and 9 are lucky number while 13 is bad luck number, lol xD Another story in islamic version we've got a lot of good number like 5, 17, 30 and so on.

I have a question, I used to watch dorama (japanese drama) and it said there that sixes six are bad number, is that true?

  • To  Batuhan  Thank you for your comment.

  • To Estanis Thank you for your comment. The number 4 and 9 aren't avoided in trains, theater seats. Public things seem not to be affected by them.

  • To Mary Thank you for your comment. I agree with you.

  • Mary stole my words for your blog :)

I wonder if number 4 and 9 are also avoided in trains, theatre seats... in your country.
  • I've heard before how important is numerology for the japanese culture. I find it very interesting, even tho I don't believe numbers can have any influence (well, just in a bank account maybe haha)

We don't have this 'tradition' in my country, but for some people here (the so-called 'superstitious' people) 7 is a 'lucky' number and 13 is an unfavorable one. There is also another superstition that makes every Tuesday 13th an 'unlucky day'. But in other countries like the US the unlucky date is the Friday 13th.

So I guess your good/bad luck depends on where you are ;)

    Thanks for the topic.

  • To Mohammad  I knew 13 is an unlucky number because I knew the movie "Friday The 13th".
