Gadgets are the magic wand of today's generation. Their life is dependent heavily on it. They spend most of their time on it, especially for fun and entertainment purposes. In terms of studying, it has replaced books, dictionaries, and even teachers in many ways. Some students prefer reading ebooks to the hard copy version. However, based on my observation, only a few students make the best use of gadgets for studying purposes.

In my opinion, gadgets especially smartphones are analogous to a knife in their use. If we don't use it effectively and wisely it will do us more harm than give us optimum benefit. For example, some of my students use their smartphones to improve their English language competence through reading comics, watching English video tutorials, listening to songs, and many others. They take note of new vocabulary they encounter. So, when they take a written test, they score highly. On the other hand, most students who use their smartphones mostly for fun are just wasting their time and get no lasting benefit. They score poorly on the written exam and have low literacy skills.

Based on my students' cases, I can conclude that teachers should tirelessly remind their students to make the best use of their gadgets if they are to get dividends in their investment of buying smartphones. Otherwise, their money and time are spent on something useless.

  • Excess of any thing is bad. Students sometimes use smartphone for game purpose which is to some extent is not bad. Change of activity  relax our mind. However I do agree you and appreciate you come with such a nice idea.  Thank for sharing

    • Thank you Persona for your response. Yes, I do agree with you that students need some variation of activities to lessen their boredom and game is one of them. It is a practical way of escape from daily life pressure.

  •  Your thoughts are well-organised, a nice small piece of writing, a good read.

    • Thank you Shaheen for your compliment. That's very kind of you to say so.

  • Halo Yeri guru. Saya berbahagia berkanalan dengan anda. I really agree with you, my respected teacher. As you said, those small gadgets are making our way of life. I would not say it is a two-weapon edge but they are really indeed shaping our life. Wherever you go,

people are holding their cell phones and either calling someone or watching a video, or even planning their ideas for tomorrow's work. Some of them are taking photos on their mobile phones. The main problem is our kids. They use them excessively and the consequences are always negative. Thanks, teacher Yeri for a nice topic.

    • Thank you Salah Gamma. I do agree with you that the majority of today's teens are addicted to cell phone. A mother at my school aired her complaints about her son's indulgement with cell phone after going home from school. There was less and less interaction between family members as a result. Thanks God that he has changed his behavior recently and is willing to take a Koran course to spend his time in a more beneficial way. I am happy that I can help solve her family problem.
