Kartini's Day in Our Country

Kartini's Day is one of the national day which is celebrated by students in Indonesia. They hold a flag ceremony on 21th April. Kartini is one of the Indonesian heroines from Central Java that was passionate in struggling the equality of women rights in the18th century. What so interesting on that day is that school students, boys and girls, wear a traditional javanese costume. They look so cute, especially kindergarten students, when they wear it. It happened to my son last year, he wore traditional costume on Kartini's day. He was very happy and excited since he got to walk on the"cat walk".Nowadays, not many schools ask their students to wear traditional costume.

  • In my country, men and women have the same rights in voting, educating, salary....but in some areas, some families women have to serve their husbands as slavers. They can not go out to work, just stay at home to do housework, raise children, doing garden....or some have to work in field from morning to evening to earn money while their husbands just stay at home and drink wine. If the wives talk to them, the husbands will shout and beat. In the rural areas, wives even have to killed by their drunk husbands. The government is calling people to build families without violent now. I'm very sad and angry when I hear murders that husband killed wife. I hope everywhere in the earth is peace. Everybody has the same rights and people treat each other as good friends. I do hope so.
  • Excellent blog post! I love that you included such an adorable photo. (Kindergarten students love to dress up, don't they?) How refreshing to hear about a holiday celebrating women (and to know that boys celebrate it too). In Canada, women have fairly equal rights, though some may argue that men still get paid slightly higher salaries for doing the same job. Please write another blog post!
  • Dear Ariel,
Fortunately, we don't have differences between man and woman in job career/ salary. What makes it different is the capability of the person. For example, if a woman/man master English they will have good position in job and salary, no matter what the gender is. The government still allows mother with children to work as government officials or others. So, thanks to Kartini. We do hope the same.
    Thanks Ariel.
  • Wow, it's interesting that since that century the people was looking for the equality between women and men.

I think the women should have the same rights than men. Here in Mexico it is assumed that women have equal rights but in general a professional woman earn less money than a man in same conditions (education, age, experience) and sometimes is discarded for a position due she can get pregnant or have children. It is assumed that this discrimination should not happen but unfortunately it happens in some places.

I really hope full rights equality be a reality.
  • Hi Yunite,
Congratulations on your fist blog! Good description of the Kartini's Day--I'd admit I never heard of it. It sounds an interesting holiday. I like your colorful traditional costumes--I'm sure I saw those costumes on TV.
Hope to see more blogs by you! Keep it up!
  • Thanks. It is nice to know.
    All the best,
    Nafis
