Iranians are very well-known for their hospitality. A guest is so important for a host or hostess. The host must prepare everything for the guest providing food, comfortable and neat place and even if the host disagrees with the guest, he usually say nothing in order not to make the guest disappointed or upset and etc. There are a lot of proverbs in favor of guest like Guest is God's friend. It means that you must accept a guest with kindness and prepare everything for him/her.So, in our culture, we accept the guest at anytime. We rarely say "No" to the guest. When he comes to our home. We prepare fruits and cookies for him. We bring a cup of tea with squared sugar in a nice dish. After finishing the tea, we ask if he wants more tea or not. We use all nice and best dishes , plates, glasses and kitchen tools for treating the guest. For dinner or lunch, we usually prepare two different kinds of Iranian dishes which garnished very well. Apart from these disehes, we have Greek Salad or Yohgurt beside the main dish. After dinner or lunch, dessert can make our meal perfect. Ice creams or some Iranian cookies will complete the lunch or dinner. How do you treat your guest in your culture? Do you prepare any foods for them? do you have any special rules for accepting a guest? What kind of foods or fruits do you prepare? Thanks,Have Fun!

  • My dearest forget-me-not,

I totally agree with you that sometimes, we feel very uncomfortable. In Iran, people do that. They do whatever they can so that the guest be so comfortable. Sometimes, even for the host or hostess becomes so difficult because they should take care of everything from the food, the place they even sit and every other things. For example, when we have guest, my mom cooks for the whole two days. She prepares foods two days ahead of the party and we have a lot of foods and cookies and deserts. And after that, my mom is so tired which I tell her, please don't do that because the main goal is to get together and enjoying it and by doing so, you make yourself very tired and at the party time, you are almost tired because of the cooking days before. Sometimes, it's annoying. I think Balance is a great thing. We should be in Balance in everything. Not too much food preparation and not having anything for the guests. So, I favor the balance. When I have a guest, I do my best. I prepare one main food and if I have time, I cook the second food. But, if I can't I won't do it. But, I try to make everything prepared for them.
Once, I cooked a lot of foods for my guests including appetizers, main food and deserts. After finishing it, I found out my guests are not happy, women got so jealous and they even said to me that they cannot cook like me so, what are they going to do if they want to invite me to their home? So, I realized that You should know your guests first and do everything in balance.

You are so kind and so caring. I really love to be your guest and also I like to invite you to come to my home. I can cook Pizzas very well. Maybe I send one of my Pizza's photo for you to tempt you to come here. Hahahahahahaha...
I love Pizzas and pastas. Everything from Italy are fantastic. VIVA ITALY!

    Take care,
    Nafis
  • Dearest Nafis,

I love to have guests and my main goal it to make them feeling at home. So if they come only for the day, i cook food, and take extra care of them, but if they stay for a few days, i tell them to help themselves when ever they need something. I show them where everything is in the house, i give them my computer passeword, so they can use it when i am not there. What is important for me is that they are not unconfortable when they need something, so the best way for them not to be ashamed to ask, is to help themselves.
But i guess it's a very "american" way to treat guests, as i know in your culture, guests are really treated more than well. I have been hosted a few times by some muslins friends and believe me, i had the feeling i was a Queen. But sometimes it made me unconfortable to see my hosts going out of their way so much for me. I had the feeling i did not deserve such a treatment !!!

So i don't know what's the best way... maybe it's just when both sides are confortable with eachothers.

Would be interesting to know what you think about this Dear Nafis.

    Love and Hugs,

    Forget-me-not
