Some people may think English grammar is important. To make a grammatically correct sentence, you need to learn grammar such as verb tenses, prepositions, countable/uncountalbe nouns, collocations and so on - it definitely takes a lot of time and effort to learn all of them. And, if you want to pass an English test such as TOEFL, IELTS, you also need to learn grammar. Thus, people here (where I live) usually spend a lot of time learning grammar and they may start to learn it from the very beginning of their learning of English.

Some other people, however, insist that taking so much time to learn grammar is useless or just a waste of time. They reason that a child who lives in an English-speaking country can speak fluently and understand what others are saying very well, but they may not know much grammar.

I'm reading another English grammar book enthusiastically.

Do you find grammar important?

  • Hi tala,
Good to see your comment. Yes, learning grammar could be boring, but learning grammar is just learning English. So learning English could be boring, too. Even so, you must make an effort to learn it, if you really want to learn. There may be some fun ways to learn it, although I do know it takes pain and time to learn a foreign language. It isn't 'a piece of cake', but it's worth all your efforts.
BTW, listening to English radios or watching English movies or reading English books definitely isn't a 'breeze', if your level isn't high enough to do it.
    Have a nice day,
    Expector
  • hello every body,
i think that grammar is so important for student who want to improuve their way of writing.really it is like matematics and as we know that matematics is boring iespecially for litteral students . my advice is be more patient with grammar even you make a lot of mistake and try to read as much as you can . because the proverb say "the more you read the more you write " . grammar is english .
  • Hi ngtdnghia,
Glad to know you find this topic helpful. One of my goals to create this blog was to help learners here learn English grammar. I hope more and more members here can join us in this discussion.
Although there are many English grammar books now available and many good websites providing useful grammar knowledge, following this blog and taking part in this discussion will definitely facilitate learners' grammar learning and sharpen their writing skills.
It could be true that you will learn more by following this blog or joining us in the discussion than by just reading grammar books or learning the grammar content on a website.
  • Hi Tara,
Great to see your writing challenge #16 and I've added a blog to take the challenge. The challenge is beneficial for learners to practise their sports English - sports English could be a challenge to learners.
The "Bonus Writing Challenges" blog post sounds great - I hope to see it soon. That will be another opportunity for learners to learn some grammar.
  • Hi Expector, thanks for your topic ^^ I've learned a lot!
  • Thanks expector. I keep meaning to add a blog post about these "Bonus Writing Challenges". I will do that this month when I post my new challenge! Coming soon...
  • Hi Tara,
Thanks for sharing the article and your thoughts on this topic. I just read the article with great interest. An interesting article and very helpful for us to discuss the issue! The author did give us some notable facts, such as ' even the elite students still can't pass the simple test of written English', 'Poor grammar is the major reason students fail.' I hope members here can read the article and give their response here.
I appreciate your way to teach grammar - 'teach it as it comes up'. And, thanks for highlighting my mistake for me to notice it. It could be a typo, although I might be totally unaware of 'emphasis' isn't a verb when writing it. The sentence should have been: You can't emphasize/emphasise it too much. So, you can see we really could learn from our mistakes. Even though I think I'm a careful writer and know the importance of proofreading, I still made the mistake. Maybe I should be more careful next time when I write.
Yes, Tara, learning from our mistakes is a great way to learn. I greatly appreciate your 'bonus'. I noticed you would give learners here some bonus challenges for them to learn from their mistakes whenever you finded an error. This is one of the important roles you're playing as a native English teacher.
Thanks again, Tara. I'd be very thankful if you could give me more 'bonuses'.
  • Expector,
Here is an interesting article on this topic. Maybe it will help you discuss this issue with your friends!

And yes, I think it is important to teach grammar, but when I'm teaching online I prefer to just have fun with it and teach it as it comes up. In a traditional ESL classroom in Canada, beginners learn basic grammar and gradually learn more difficult tenses and rules in intermediate and advanced levels. Since I specialize in writing I like to teach bits of grammar as the problems arise. For example, this sentence of yours (You can't emphasis it too much) is probably a typo but I can highlight it and ask you to find the problem (I don't tell you the problem). Then, you will search for it and remember not to confuse the verb and noun of this word. The BONUS is that anyone who is reading this comment will also learn!

It's great to have EnglishClub.com's grammar section as a resource because I can link to ready made lessons. EnglishClub's Facebook enjoy taking daily EC quizzes. If students don't understand a mistake I can help out in this way. Learning from our mistakes is a great way to learn, don't you think? :)
  • Hi congthuydung,
You really have a point there. Your writing is good and I can tell you must have made efforts to learn English grammar. Can you share how you learned all the grammar?
I remember both of us agree that grammar is useful for learners to learn a foreign language. I can't imagine a learning course without the learning of grammar. I've been learning grammar since I started learning English, although I don't think I have got a very effective way to learn it. I do hope other members can share their ideas, opinion or thoughts on this topic.
Writing nicely and correctly is crucial for one to be successful in finding a good job, making friends, expressing oneself confidently and winning others' respect. You can't emphasis it too much. I appreciate good writing and like reading it. BTW, more reading is important for one to write somthing nice.
Hope more members can join us in this discussion!
  • Yes, writing always need a little talent. However, level of writing skill dont almost depend on any language: English or ur mother tonguage. It really start from ur ideas. U can see that when you write an English essay. If you really good at English grammar, u'll write immediately, u wont need to think it in ur mother language first and then translate it into English.
And learning E grammar is related to ur mother language. U'll find out similarities among 2 language to have ability to learn English easier
