Writing Challenge: How I Describe 'Success'

A few days ago, I had a conversation with my student about success.

Though the following dialogue is not completely the same with what I were talking at that moment, it has the similar message. :)

We were learning language, Indonesian.

Me: You got a score of 6 out of 10, four mistakes. Let's analyze your mistakes.

Stu: I thought it was easy since this is Indonesian, our language.

Me: Yeah, I will tell you that the key of mastering Indonesian or any language is reading more and more. You can read newspaper, interesting novels, and other good books. That will enrich your vocabulary.

Stu: You're right, Sis. In fact, we don't know the meaning of some words in our language.

(To be honest, none of my students call me teacher or madam, lol, they call me Sis, ^^)

Me: It's true. But don't worry. We can do our best by being patient in learning process.

Suddenly, he came up with other topic. Being stressed after answering the questions with a not so good result, he said...

Stu: But Sis, people now don't need to work hard and they can be successful in their life.

Me: How can you conclude so?

Stu: I see people just play Tik Tok and they can be successful.

(I almost die of laughter...)

Me: Wait....wait...... errmmm...

Stu: People also make videos on YouTube and they reach success.

Me: Ermmm.....

(Tell me how I should answer this? lol)

Stu: How is it, Sis?

Me: First, you should define what success is. If you mean attaining fame or wealth, than you can do that. But....... Is it your goal? There is nothing wrong with that, but, success is when you reach your goal, when you accomplish your purpose.

Stu: But they can be rich.

Me: Well, yes dear. Success is not only about being rich. Most people will look at one's wealth, it's true. However, are you sure that they are happy and find what they want? We mostly look at the appearance of people on their success. Try to think more deeply about reaching the goal. If a man has reached his goal, then it would be a great happiness and success for him, even if it was not to be rich.

Stu: But, we need money.

Me: So true. Most important is we should do our best in life. Even if you become a YouTuber, the best way is you have knowledge. In my point of view, success is when you can be useful for others, whether it is your family, your friends, or even foreigners. If you reach that, then I believe that success will chase after you. ^^

Then,....I forgot how I analyzed his mistakes, lol

*Stu: Student :D

This is how I simply describe success. I would like to know your views.

Thank you so much for reading my blog. Have a nice day! ^_^

Many thanks for your appreciation. I was going to say that. I know that I described 'success' so simply. Striving, struggling, and endeavoring is of the priority. That's the important thing.

Thank you once again for your valuable comment. It completes my blog.

Have a blessed day! :)

Hi Houssine, Glad to see you!

Thank you for your appreciation. Well, you have a point there. An additional value by their presence or their absence. That could be the difference between the successful people and the unsuccessful.

Thank you once again. Good day! :)

Hi Tam,

Thank you for visiting my blog. I'm glad that you enjoyed the conversation. :D

Yup, agree with you. After writing this dialogue, I found the meaning of success on oxforddictionaries.com. Success means "The accomplishment of an aim or purpose". So, it's no doubt about it.

Thank you once again. Good day! :)

Very well 'dialogue'.  But striving, struggling, endeavouring, is of the priority, "success' is secondary. There is being shown on NBC, watch it you will understand what I mean.

Apakah kamu tahu mengapa mereka memanggil mu saudara perempuan? Do you have any idea why do they call you sister instead of using the respectable title, teacher? The reason is very easy. You are dealing with them successfully. Thanks, mod. Onee for your enticing blog.

Good point of view"sis". Many ppl around the world define success as being famous or rich. However it is reallybeyond that. Maybe fame and wealth "could" be additional results of success and not success itself. Many bad ppl got famous. Many others got rich. But both aren't giving any additional value by their presence and their absence could be more useful than their presence and here where successful ppl make the difference.

Great Dialogue! I hope against hope that it might have surprised you much the moment when your student came up with the opinion that he had believed success as something entirely different than  the real success in the world. Well Overall it is wonderful! Stay blessed! Onee-chan
