Onee's Writing Challenge: How I Describe "Friendship"

Friendship is a word that people often use, and often even they use it thoughtlessly. Especially in the virtual media.
We get friendship requests from people, we hardly ever know.
The word friendship got a new meaning during the last years.

I always struggle to call it friendship when I just met someone.

Sincere friendship needs patience and time for growing.

A real friendship is precious. Often, we have a wide circle of acquaintances, but only a few people are in our close circle of friends.

So I want to tell you what friendship means to me.

True friendship means knowing each other very well, loyalty, trust, patience, listening, compassion, familiarity, empathy, and also forgiveness.

We can not choose which family we are born into, but we can choose our friends. We should do that very carefully because there is no better gift than true friendship.

Friendship is like a tree. The tree's height is not important but the depth of its roots. ( Borrowed from a quote I read.) If a storm bends the tree, its strong roots will hold it.

The best way to keep a friendship stable and alive is honesty and respect. We must not always agree with everything our friends do, but we can try to understand why they do so.
But friendship is not a one-way direction. We may expect the same from our friends. Friendship means to be there for each other, in good and bad times.

There are many quotes about Friendship.
The followings are my favorite. (It's not exactly translated from German to English, only similar.)

"A friend is the one who knows the song of your life and sings it for you when you have forgotten its lyrics or melody."

"Friendship is a door between two people. She can sometimes creak, she can pinch, but she is never locked. (Balthasar Gracian y Morales ")

Thanks so much for your comment, Mishaikh.

I always appreciate your opinion.

Can you send me the link of your blog you spoke about?

Thank you Rose for sharing  the nice topic

Sometimes we ask " who is a friend ?" Maybe we ask " Why some people are our friends and others not ? " and " who is the best friend for us? "

It reminds me a poem by Oscar Wild :

When Narcissus died, the pool of his pleasure changed from a cup of sweet waters into a cup of salt tears, and the Oreads came weeping through the woodland that they might sing to the pool and give it comfort.

And when they saw that the pool had changed from a cup of sweet water into a cup of salt tears, they loosened the green tresses of their hair and said, “We do not wonder that you should mourn in this manner for Narcissus, so beautiful was he.”

“But was Narcissus beautiful?” said the pool.

“Who should know better than you?” asked the Oreads. “Us did he ever pass by, but you sought he for, and would lie on your banks and look down at you, and in the mirror of your waters he would mirror his own beauty.”

And the pool answered, “But I loved Narcissus because, as he lay on my banks and looked down at me, in the mirror of his eyes I saw ever my own beauty mirrored.”

It means we are looking for the reflection of ours on other people.  actually we are looking for reflection of our hearts on  shiny surface of a friend. So a friend is the owner of that heart which can reflect ours better and the best friends is a friend whose heart reflect ours as the best . like a clean polished mirror that can reflect everything well .

Hi, Rose, I will sign under each word said here by you. Thank you so much for sharing such a strong opinion. I have also heard that friendship in childhood is a general rehearsal of love.

Thanks once more )))

   Rose  ,

You are right  we long more to the place  where we were born  :)

You have very well explained.  We have acquaintances a lot, but 'friends' a few.  Friendship is a very responsible relation on which seldomly we fall fulfilled.

A nice topic indeed.  I have already posted a blog long time ago.

Dear Paula, I am glad to see you again.

Thank you for confirming my perception.

You're right. Not all changes in life make us happy, but we have to live with them, whether we like it or not. It is up to us to stay alert.

We need to recognize what is important to us and keep it alive.

Dear Onee-chan.

These words, you ask for where I got them, express my conviction and my feeling.
You are right. The time will show what kind of friendship we have. False friends will go faster than they came.
So we should be careful when someone pretends to be a friend.

I thank you for your comment. If I've made you deeply thinking about friendship, I think I fulfilled the purpose of this challenge.

Dear Rosemary. I am sorry that you don't have real friends at the place where you are living right now.
I exactly understand you. If we are living far from our old home, we miss everything that was familiar. Separation doesn't give us enough time to keep friendships of our childhood and youth as close as we would like.

I learned the same when I left my old hometown to go with my husband to the city where I live now. I had been living for 24 years in the town of my birth when I left there.

I live here in the new city much longer, but the home of my heart is still my old hometown. Nothing replaces the time of our childhood and youth. Although my center of life is now in my new city, and all of my children and grandchildren are with me here, I never got that kind of friends as I had in my former life.

The deepest friendships have been built in childhood and youth.

Real friends never disappear, no matter where we go.

Every year, when I visit my mom in my old hometown, some of my former classmates and my friends organize a meeting. We go to a nice restaurant where we can eat something and chat with each other. I am grateful that they don't have forgotten me. Very fast, the old-time lives up again. We always have a good time with each other. I am going to visit my old hometown in May again, and I am looking forward to seeing my friends.

Good subject Rose!!  I agree with your perception.  Lucky indeed if we have one person in our lives that we can call a true friend.  Seems the meaning of the word has lost it's essence over the years.  The world has changed as all things do, but with the changes we have become too busy, hence all we find are acqaintances.  Plus the things we see and know makes us wary of allowing anyone closer than that.  Sad but true.  It is difficult to say the least.  But I do love the thought of it.  Great Job!!!  Thank you for sharing.

Wow, Rose!

How you got all of these words.... So meaningful! You made me think deeply about it.

Time can also prove what kind of friendship we have.

I love your description. A good message!

So many thanks for participating and writing a wonderful blog. :)
