In Holy Qur'an, Sunnah and Bible you will find many texts clearly indicate that it is obligatory to fulfill promises and covenants, and it is haraam to break them.

Almighty Allah says in Holy Qur'an: “O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? It is most hateful to Allah that you should say that which you do not do.” (Surah as-Saff 61:2-3)

And in Bible: “If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.” Numbers 30:2 ESV

Thus, if you are like most people; you make commitments to others all the time; the questions are: do you keep your promises? And, how many you break?

Some defined "promise" as "a legally binding declaration that gives the person to whom it is made a right to expect or to claim the performance […] of a specified act."

When we don't keep a promise to people, they would simply feel that we don't value them. Even if we break small promises, people may not count on us. Can you imagine such relationships marked by broken promises?

On the other hand, such an act; i.e. when we don't value our own word, it reflects that we do not only disrespect others' feelings but also ourselves as it may damage our image.

It is not easy to break hearts. So, don’t let someone down. Don’t say something that you cannot hold to. Don’t harm your self-esteem or others' esteem. Stick to your words and fulfil your vows.

Here are some synonyms that illustrate the meaning of the word "promise". I put them in a table, and I took them from McMillan Dictionary.

Keep

verb

to do what you said you would do

Hold To

phrasal verb

to do what you have promised or decided

Stick To

Come Through

Honour

Deliver

Conclusion

We have to be true. Allah commands us to be people of our word and gives us the ultimate example of someone who does it: Himself! He does not leave us without an example, so this should persuade us as we need to be people who imitate and emulate His Almighty and keep our promises to others. Again, we must accomplish our own words.

All morality is a key and fundamental guarantee of human development. We need them to be applied in practice and deeds not just words. We need to raise the levels of trust among us, so it may take place when we have high manners. People need to treat each other well, and this has a great impact on the evolution of communities.

Exactly Mishaikh.. AndI would like to add that those ones who break their covenants and repeat it, stripping themselves of the attribute of humanity and rooting hypocrisy and evil. Allah has forbidden the abrogation of the covenants and annulled them for any reason except in the event that it is impossible to fulfil the covenant for a compelling reason.

Dear SNR,

You must be proud that you have this great and strong character. Actually, positive attitude matters more than we think by the way. However, Being pure and clear with yourself means how much honest you are to others. So, I am honoured and thankful that you commented on my blog.

Dear hadeel,

Whether it is small, big, important or the one which requires some efforts, whichever is required to keep the promise, sometimes it's difficult to keep it.

I strongly refrain myself from making promises or commitments. In any case if couldn't make it not only it makes feel guilty to the one who made a promise but also to the person who expects his or her promise to be fulfilled.

Thanks for this discussion.

Hi  Hadeel,

Good blog, keep it up and expecting more blogs from you. Here some quotes about promise.

1.Dont promise when you are happy, dont reply when you are angry and dont decide when you are sad. 2. The most important reason to keep your promises to, is yourself. 3.Three things you should never break: promises, trust, and someones heart. 4.promises is a cloud, fulfillment is rain. 5.promise,is a big word it either make something, or it breaks everything.

Thanks and regards

Hi Miss. Hadeel,
First of all thanking you to choose such an important topic for your blog!!! Yeah it's an vital issue forever to be honest in our lives. And we, everyones should ask ourselves that if we keep our promises. I think most of us are guilty for breaking the promises. So at least from today we should seriously promise to not breaking a promise or should think hundred times before making promise in sake of happiness in life. Thanks again the writer of the blog.

Hi Mz.O.M.

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I agree with you Mr. O.M. that parents and childhood play a great role in forming conscience, but I also believe that mature people are grown enough to choose their own manners and attitude. Moreover, they have to resist negative behaviour as they are no longer children. Again, we have to know from deep inside that promises are not mere words come out of mouths. Promises as a case is one that has two parties are involved in.

Thank you again for your comment.

HI Mr. Khalil,

I agree that parents have the essential role in bringing up kids, yet the question is: what about those orphan kids, would they all grow up having no morals? And what about those who do not have role models in their lives?

Thank you for your comment.
