Ketupat - A traditional Malay food

Ketupat is a typical traditional Malay food which being served during the Eid Celebration. It's rice cooked in weaved coconut leaves.During this year's Eid Celebration, we decided to have it the traditional way. Normally we just buy the modern version of it which is rice in a plastic bag and cook it.I have to admit, both my sister and I did not know how to weave the coconut leaves, so we just bought empty ketupat packets at the market. Then we have to carefully pour the rice into the packets, about 3/4 full. The packets then will be left to boil on the stove for hours - at least 2 - 3 hours. After that, left it to dry. Ketupat is best to be eaten with rendang - dry stew, or with peanut sauce

  • Hi Sima .. no one is cooking. LOL. I just woke up, and I'm hungry too. Hahaha

  • So who wanna cook them ...

    I am hungry :'(

  • Yes ⊱ Mickey ⊰, they are beautiful and the rice that cooked in them are really nice smelling.

  • They look beautiful, woooo...

  • Dear WMW, the ketupat itself is nothing much, it's just a plain rice cooked in the coconut leaves, but the process of preparing it, that's the best part. It take hours sometimes to fill up the packets, because the opening is so small and it's tedious. The teasing and exchanging stories between family members make it more special.

  • Hehehe Noorany, HIGH FIVE!

  • Love Satay! We can find similar ones at night markets or food stands here, particularly, when it is served with some Kimchi together, it's YUM! :)

  • Hi Little Tree, I am ashamed to admit that I never master to weave the packet. I'm just too clumsy. LOL. Yes, it's an art because not everyone can weave it.

  • Hi Grace, yes, it's not that big. So normally I will have about 3 pieces of this ketupat. Sometimes we eat it together with Satay - a skewed meat cooked on grill.
