  • My 103-year-old grandma was moved into a nursing home yesterday. It was a very sad day for the family. It's hard to believe that it took this long for her to need nursing care. She spends most of the day sleeping. I miss her.

  • Nice to see your grandma's kind face.

I love to be around elderly people. They have a lot to say. They are so much experienced in life. Their advice is so useful, since they talk out of experience. Their memories of the past is so sweet. When they talk about the difficulties they've had in life when they were younger, we get to know how life was simple and nice, in spite of difficulties then. Also we get to know how much life's got easier these days, though we have other kinds of difficulties such as busy life and less healthy life both mentally and physically.

I always cheer up when I see the elderly relatives. They are treasures of families. When an elderly person passes away in family, I get sad. Yet, there are elderly people who don't seem kind when you're around them. Maybe they've had some kind of problem, esp in their family. Some are left alone, even if they've kids and grandchildren. Some are left alone in centers specified for elderly people. Once I met those in such a place, and found out how sad they are. It is cruel to leave parents alone when they need us to take care of them. Sometimes, it gets difficult to take care of sick old ones, but we should remember how merciful they were to us when we were kids with limited abilities to take care of ourselves.

In our culture, we should always respect the ones older than us, even if they are a few years older. But nowadays, we see that parents are not respected as it was in the past. In past, for example, our parents wouldn't shout at their parents, or they wouldn't disagree so much with their requests. But these days, we disrespect our parents so much.

    In our religion,Islam, parents should be paid special attention and care. In the Holy Quran, we have verses that advise us about parents especially when they get old;

"And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff, and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word."here

"And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." here

The two verses above are such examples.

In the society, we usually treat elderly ones with respect and kindness. For example, we help them cross the street, or we help them carry their bags, or we help them read something, or we give our seats in bus for them to sit, and so on.

Anyway, thanks so much for reminding us of such an important issue.

    Have all the best.

May your grandma live long in great health.

    :)

  • Your comments are so sweet. I think she is beautiful, too! I wish I could see her more often, but she lives on the other side of Canada. I hope to see her this year. My dad is visiting her right now, and says she is doing very well.

  • I think  the older persons need not only our care and respect but also the feeling that they are still important in our life and we need their wishes and words as they need us ...

Thank you for sharing ,your grandma looks amazing !

  • She looks like a fairy Grandma in the fairy tale which I used to read, with white hair and the eyes full of love.

  • wow..she is still beautiful, right Teacher? Please pass my "hello" to her. With all the best.

  • Tara, your Grandma looks not only charming but also affable. I suppose she is a well-disciplined person for her life. For me, I like being with elderly people since they are like a book or a mirror that I could always learn something from no matter what it is- positive or negative things. Your Grandma reminds me of one of my friends, who is 88-year-old.

    Ta very much for sharing.

  • Wow, she looks much younger than her age!
