Sparrows

When I was at a shopping mall, to my delight and awe, there were sparrows nesting in some of the so called just right nesting habitat. What a way to accommodate to human situations; in cool air-conditioned huge place ; and there were many, feasting  on the fresh coriander leaves and grains of several varieties; despite the people moving around, the commotion, loud music. They seem to be human lovers. No wonder we often find them nesting in some pipe holes, or in corners of lofts in the house.  No doubt trees have been cut down, the forest area is depleting the use of mobiles and many factors are having adverse effects on birds. Love for nature need not be developed; it is inbuilt , the only thing is we need to be some what more observant and sensitive towards other things around us apart from our daily chores and routine life.

1. METHIONYLTHREONYLTHREONYGLUTAMINYLARGINYL…ISOLEUCINE

Note the ellipses. All told, the full chemical name for the human protein titin is 189,819 letters, and takes about three-and-a-half hours to pronounce. The problem with including chemical names is that there’s essentially no limit to how long they can be. For example, naming a single strand of DNA, with its millions and millions of repeating base pairs, could eventually tab out at well over a billion letters.

2. LOPADOTEMACHOSELACHOGALEOKRANIOLEIPSAN…PTERYGON

The longest word ever to appear in literature comes from Aristophanes’ play,Assemblywomen, published in 391 BC. The Greek word tallies 171 letters, but translates to 183 in English. This mouthful refers to a fictional fricassee comprised of rotted dogfish head, wrasse, wood pigeon, and the roasted head of a dabchick, among other culinary morsels.

3. PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS

At 45 letters, this is the longest word you’ll find in a major dictionary. An inflated version ofsilicosis, this is the full scientific name for a disease that causes inflammation in the lungs owing to the inhalation of very fine silica dust. Despite its inclusion in the dictionary, it’s generally considered superfluous, having been coined simply to claim the title of the longest English word.

4. PARASTRATIOSPHECOMYIA STRATIOSPHECOMYIOIDES

The longest accepted binomial construction, at 42 letters, is a species of soldier fly native to Thailand. With a lifespan of five to eight days, it’s unlikely one has ever survived long enough to hear it pronounced correctly.

5. PSEUDOPSEUDOHYPOPARATHYROIDISM

This 30-letter thyroid disorder is the longest non-coined word to appear in a major dictionary.

6. FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION

By virtue of having one more letter than antidisestablishmentarianism, this is the longest non-technical English word. A mash up of five Latin roots, it refers to the act of describing something as having little or no value. While it made the cut in the Oxford English Dictionary, Merriam-Webster volumes refuse to recognize it, chalking up its existence to little more than linguistic ephemera.

7. SUBDERMATOGLYPHIC

At 17 characters, this is the longest accepted isogram, a word in which every letter is used only once, and refers to the underlying dermal matrix that determines the pattern formed by the whorls, arches, and ridges of our fingerprints.

8. SQUIRRELLED

Though the more commonly accepted American English version carries only one L, both Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionaries recognize this alternate spelling and condone its one syllable pronunciation (think “world”), making it the longest non-coined monosyllabic English word at 11 letters.

9. ABSTENTIOUS

One who doesn’t indulge in excesses, especially food and drink; at 11 letters this is the longest word to use all five vowels in order exactly once.

10. ROTAVATOR

A type of soil tiller, the longest non-coined palindromic word included in an English dictionary tallies nine letters. Detartrated, 11 letters, appears in some chemical glossaries, but is generally considered too arcane to qualify.

11. AND 12. CWTCH, EUOUAE

The longest words to appear in a major dictionary comprised entirely of either vowels or consonants. A Cwtch, or crwth, is from the Welsh word for a hiding place. Euouae, a medieval musical term, is technically a mnemonic, but has been accepted as a word in itself.

I joined a devotional community that helps visually impaired. They require writers who can write their examination papers. For past several years I have been writing papers for such students. I would like to narrate few experiences as a writer. Initially some 7-8 yrs back I was sent to help girls living in a blind home, I had to revise their lessons, read out to the entire class the questions and answers, so on. The girls were quite inquisitive and affectionate as well. At the end of the class they would crowd around me, feel my hair, clothes, hold hands and even smell me for frgarnce of my deo. They inquired about my family, shared their agonies , but with a smile, always. Each day they welcomed me with smiles and cheerful faces, shared some snack their parents gave them;they never hesitsted to share their snacks and sweets (the girls were around 9-12 yrs old). I wondered how they could maintain a smile on their faces, some had poor clothing on their body.

Within a year there were more volunteers to help and my class was taken over by another lady. When I joined the next term, I saw another lady, I entered the class and requested her that I have been teaching the class but as soon as they heard my voice they ran out to greet me, insisting to continue, but that lady was not ready to give away the class I taught. I dropped the idea of teaching them. Soon I had the opportunity to write papers for Physiotherapy, and other college going visually impaired.

Once I had to interview few students as a part of entance exam of massage therapy course. There was a last question where the person had to tell his/her three wishes. Each one had an ambition; to perform as musician, actor, teacher and so on. Lastly there was a pretty girl with a very soft and sweet smile on her face, very mild and sober in personality. After completing the qustionaire, I asked her to tell about the three wishes she had. The girl sweetly smiled and said, I do not want anything. I said it was a part of interview and tried to encourage her to  openly speak shunning her fear or shyness. But she continued with the same answer, finally I suggested if she met God she could wish for eyes to see the world, but she again smiled and said ''No I do not desire for anything, I am contented and happy.'' Finally I suggested she could ask something for others and she said ''Oh yes ! I would ask God to make my parents happy, bless them with everything, that would give me immense joy too.'' Her answer with persistant smile truly touched my heart. She never blamed God for not blessing her with vision or poor lifrstyle, but she never knew how beautiful she looked and how impressive her voice, thoughts and gesture was.

Untill today I have not forgotten her; when I left I had a very beautiful lesson from her.

I often come across such wonderful experiences and learn a lesson from the visually impaired.

Please let me know your views.

The Lucky Cats Survived Being Washed For 1 Hour In The Washing Machine

the lucky cat survived being washing for one hour in the washing machine

Many cats are curious , with playful personality. There is a saying: “Curiosity killed the cat.” But the true funny stories told us what is exceptional.

The kitten is called Princess, it lives in Aberdeen, Scotland, Princess recently climbed into a washing machine to explore, but the owner Susan Gordonand didn’t know, she shut the door on the washing machine and pressed key. 1 hour later, Susan was surprised to find that princess actually in the washer, tightly holding a pair of jeans.

Susan rushed to rescue kittens from the washing machine, send it to the pet hospital. The surgeon said, Princess was shaking when it was sent to hospital, shaking, nose bleeding, eyes injured. It was subsequently taken to the emergency room, enter the oxygen, urination, discharged the water from the lung, treat the the eyes hurt by soapy water hurt. Fortunately, the cat is full of vim and vigour
again after two days of rest.

Silly fluffy stuff , PIGEONS

Hi Friends,

We often see countless pigeons around, near fountains in the city, enjoying the water, sitting pretty on air conditioners of an apartment, on window sills, old houses, and just anywhere. They seem to love humans; we rarely see pigeons nesting on trees like many birds.

Here in my city Mumbai there are places where people feed them and you will see only these plump birds feeding all day long, tirelessly. I have never seen other birds join them; it is only this species; not sparrows, bulbuls, crows, or other species who generally do love grains.

I wonder why people find it so amusing to feed them making them lousier as they truly are. Some despise these birds because of the annoying vocal chords perhaps, the sound seems to irritate people, and however, the innocent birds hardly realize how people also despise them.

Has anyone noticed that this species is often quarrelling, holding each other by beaks, twisting and turning, flapping wings hard to slap each other? We have spacious windows and have planted some plants, and these birds often land there on the pots just to have a terrible fight. They hardly notice when I poke a big stick or a ruler to shoo them away. When they do see something hitting or slapping them they are so terrified. They struggle to escape through the bars of the window, squeezing their flabby bodies flying onto another apartment to continue their fight. God alone knows what they quarrel for?

Quite a while ago, the pigeons struggled hard to bring in some long twigs, placed them in the pots and even before a nest was ready they laid eggs into it. OH! How could they be so silly compared to other birds, because the very moment some nasty greedy crows landed up and picked up the fresh meal and feasted over it. I pitied the female once when she had laid eggs and one of her egg was snatched away; my daughter placed a small white table tennis ball in the pot near the remaining egg so the female would feel her eggs are there.

Would you believe! This female and male both were easily fooled by this trick. They thought the table tennis ball was their egg after all and sat upon it, the ball was light so it would slip away, the bird pushed it by its beak to place it beneath its feathers. We have sliding glass panes; so it was a very hilarious sight to see how this innocent bird got fooled.

We had a good time laughing over it. Imagine a pigeon hatching a table tennis ball along with a real egg ! ! !

But it was placed with the intention that the couple would not feel sad about their lost egg eaten by the crow. There is more to the pigeon tale, will write more in my next post.

Entry of sparrows in the bird house

Hi friends,

Just as I mentioned previously we placed a home for sparrow and no one dared to enter it, but one fine morning here were our new owners who came to visit the pretty bird house. They had some twittering and chirping among themselves, perhaps they twittered about the pros and cons of residing at the bird house. After some hesitation, fears and doubts, finally one of them peeped in through the hole. The sparrow hopped into the house and in some time came out discussing about how spacious it was perhaps. The two one after another hopped in and out of the house cheerfully.
After a while I saw each one bring in the straws, and fibers of broom sticks, the little grass blades that grew in one of our plant pots for construction of their nest. The fresh green grass blades disappeared in no time from every pot. Within a few days the bird house was absolutely packed with straws and feathers. It appeared they just peeled off some pigeon to obtain feathers for their new home.
We were overjoyed because soon there would be tiny chirping sounds of baby sparrows.

One fine day I was shocked to see the nest shattered, the crow had destroyed their nest, and he had pulled out large amount of straws and feathers. I had no way of protecting and shielding the bird house from this nasty creature, but this turned out very positive because the sparrows had located their newcomers hidden beneath the pile of all the stuff. They located their babies and soon they were busy feeding young ones with worms and critters.
I was thrilled, in few days I would be able to see them grow up as cuddly, adorable, fluffy baby sparrows.
It is indeed very difficult today for house sparrows to survive, no wonder people hold campaigns to help them breed.
It is heart rendering to see the crow tear apart the young ones to feed its own babies. Oh! What a cycle it is!

We have young ones of crows perching right in the front of our window. The baby crows perch on the building under construction next to ours. They simply keep crowing repeatedly for more and more food. Up at the bird house the tiny house sparrows are busy feeding their young ones.

It is going to be fun but quite tough to keep the bird house protected from vicious eyes of the crows.

birds at home

We have several house sparrows twittering and chirping in the window, picking grains we drop in the pots of plants. We were so thrilled to see them build a nest in a nearby pipe hole, so we decided to put up a pretty bird house for them. After soemtime we put up the bird houes high up on the wall outside the glass sliding window on the bars, but on the inside of the window bars.
Few days later we were happy to see a pair take a look at the bird house, but did not dare to get in. It remained vacant and the previous pair continued to live in the pipe hole.
I changed the place of the birdhouse and placed on the other larger window of our living room, a pair was happy to see this house, for a few days delightfully brought in straws and other building material, but to my dismay they vanished and the bird house still remians vacant.
Just do not not know why they do not build a house, perhaps they love to live in pipeholes and other places, but do not want to take up any obligation from us.

Sparrows

I shifted into a new house with my parents. It was a first floor house with a nice verandah and a terrace. After all the unpacking of things,  we settled in  a few days.  Soon I realized that we were not the only occupants of that place; there was a couple too, a pair of sparrows.

The sparrow couple perched at ventilator of the wall, and were planning to reside at the ventilator.  There early morning chirping would wake me too. The early risers, at day break would start there tedious and unfruitful task of collecting straws and  cotton fiber, soft feathers and yarn small twigs. This went on for several days and weeks .  Everything they tried to place at the ventilator would fall off  but sparrows never left hope.  They continued with there activity till the end of day.
Finally I came upon a solution. I cut a hole in a card box, decorated it with some colors and mounted it on the ventilator. Somehow managed to fix it firmly by means of a wire to the ventilator. The sparrows were in a turmoil to see things at the ventilator, they kept chirping, flying around, like someone had intruded into their territory.  Later, to the joy of the pair, they had a pretty apartment for themselves, hesitant at first;  but hopped into the box one by one to explore the whole new residence.
They got the stuff again, everyday, but now it was in the box .  Soon they had their nest all ready for the new arrival, The process began, hatching, then feeding the little ones continuously with great fresh insect food.
The pair would unhesitantly demand the freshly kneaded dough and feed the little ones.  It was a pleasure to observe their efforts to fed the little ones, tirelessly.  It was a wonderful sight to see the chicks peep out of the hole pushing each other and chirping away tirelessly.  The chicks grew fast and looked very healthy with fluffy feathers, small pink beak, and cute bead like bright innocent eyes. it was a  magnificent event of mom and dad giving lessons to their chicks to fly.  They would chirp in a typical twitter or a sound, to lure the chicks to come out and try out their first fly.  Ultimately they did .  One by one all the three cute chicks were out of their warm and cosy  nest, perched on a near by tree branch.  They were off.  The nest lay barren, and all the fun seemed to have ended.
I decided to clean up all the mess, brought down the box and cleaned it up.  Then replaced it with another card box  a new one for another breeding.  Few weeks later they were there again. The previous chicks having fully grown and flown off.  The parent sparrows continued with their next mission.  It went on for seven years, until one day male sparrow was not located, it did turn not up.  Next day the female had another male to befriend her , but soon after that the female disappeared too, putting an end to the life cycle of breeding chicks. Now no more sparrows in my house, missed them, there was no chirping as before, no one to demand for the dough. Soon I was announced by my parents that we were to shift to another state, just as my sparrow left I was soon packing up and leaving with memories of sparrows, I learnt a lot from them, which is not yet added to this article.

page from my life

The day break is so lovely ! Before the rising of the sun, the colors of the sky keep changing, the varying shapes of the clouds, twitter of birds, especially the house sparrows. They seem to have some sort of musical gatherings, chirping, so loud and sharp.
Recently, many organisations are set out to save sparrows, the house sparrows which are getting extinct.  They provide ready made bird houses, bird feeders, and provide sufficient information.  They provide information on making bird feeders at home using pet( plastic ) bottles.  Well, I tried out a bird feeder, but to my disappointment the sparrows hardly took a look at it. After a few days I had to go back to feeding them at the window sill, scattering some grains and sprouted pulses, (their favorite food), rice and so on, they really love to feed on basil seeds, and place a bowl of water in some reachable place for them; I have placed it in one of the plant pots, they can quench their thirst in this scorching heat.  I think these small steps taken by every person could prove beneficial in saving many birds, leave alone sparrows, there are bulbuls known as greenbuls and humming birds too. I find some more species of birds around my house.

When I was at a shopping mall, to my delight and awe, there were sparrows nesting in some of the so called just right nesting habitat.
